They're adding Zuko's scar in with CGI.

I just think of it as a different canon. It doesn't have to be the exact same. I'm pretty sure that even after watching the finished thing, I'll still like the series better, but at least it should be interesting. I wanna see where he goes with all the choices he's made.

[identity profile] holidaylights.livejournal.com 2009-06-05 09:23 pm (UTC)(link)

Because pointing out blatent racism that even the blind should be able to see is totally nitpicking.

I actually dgaf about the rest, except maybe the scar, because it's a pretty important part of Zuko's character and story.

[identity profile] kinosino.livejournal.com 2009-06-05 09:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I do like the more muted approach to wardrobe and the like, what with the tan robes and indigo tattoo (REALITY IS BROOOOOOWN), but wardrobe is a completely different issue from casting. I've been trying not to keep up with this to avoid headaches, though - so seriously, yeah, what's up with this lack of scar? It's kind of significant.

Can't say as I blame you for feeling that way, OP. Sometimes I feel the same about the whole thing. I'm also with [livejournal.com profile] hyper_piggie about disconnecting the movie from the show at this point.

[identity profile] ali-wildgoose.livejournal.com 2009-06-05 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I think I know who you are. And that makes me really, really fucking sad.

Look. There are people who're nitpicking this thing for "canon" reasons like Zuko's scar and the color schemes and whatever. And there are people who are upset because of offensively awful casting policies and the often just as offensively awful things people say in defense of those casting policies.

Not everyone who's "bitching" about this movie is bitching for the same reason. Lumping them all together because they're collectively ruining your fun isn't cowardly, it's lazy and shallow.

Wow, tell us how you really feel.

Also, your sweeping generalizations are kind of irritating to say the least. The majority of us over at [livejournal.com profile] racebending are angry and hurt at the casting, not that Katara's dress is aquamarine instead of sky blue. Sure, there may be some nitpicking, but that's just because in between the epic essays of racial relations, yellowface/brownface implications, histories of the actual real-world cultures Avatar is based off of, and other posts discussing topics related to the issues that led to the casting of the movie, we kind of like to laugh at the crappy pictures being leaked.

Bah, call us names, put words in our mouths. I don't really care what people like you think anymore. You aren't worth the effort.

[identity profile] fm-gatekeeper.livejournal.com 2009-06-05 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)
...This is never going to end, is it.

[identity profile] powercorrupts.livejournal.com 2009-06-05 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I won't lie. I love these sort of "omg people are going to call me a racist for no reason, the big meanies! I'm being sooooo oppressed!" secrets. There's a sort of unintentional humour to the irony of someone feeling oppressed and insulted by being called a racist.

I gave up on the movie a while ago myself, when it became clear that they had no real care about making a stirring story that could break a lot of hollywood rules and truly represent what the series was. Nit-pick? That implies that people are searching through the right to pick out the wrong. If anything, I'd say it's harder to find what's right with this movie. I have better piles of fail to get emotionally invested in.

"Wah wah wah, there's real issues and I don't care because I just want people to only post fanfict/art/not be in my fandom."

One, most people's beef with it is the fact that there is blatant racism in the casting, a complete and utter disregard for the original source, and huge amounts of fail in regard to basic knowledge of the inspiration to the story (as in, half our fucking world). The high ups in the production crew just don't give a fuck.

Two, it hasn't been clearly defined as another version. Same characters, same plot, same setting, same everything except the things that made it good. I cannot wait for Prince of Persia (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0473075/) to come out so I can show you whiners like you how a retelling is done well.

[identity profile] vashti-lives.livejournal.com 2009-06-05 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow... are you seriously lumping genuine complaints about racism in the casting in with petty complaints about costume design? Because complaints about racism =/= complaints about costume design.

[identity profile] rabbitucker.livejournal.com 2009-06-06 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
It's pretty universal, man. You're just going to have to get used to it. I'm pretty sure that Johannes Keppler defined it in the fifteenth century, followed by Newton in the 1600's:

Unpleasable fanboys/fangirls are unpleasable. It was scientifically proven hundreds of years ago.

God. If you don't give a shit, why does being seen as racist bother you?

[identity profile] snowdevil-crow.livejournal.com 2009-06-06 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
I don't watch Avatar or anything, so I don't know much about it, but I've seen a few pictures and... at the risk of sounding racist or ignorant or something, I just have to ask.

How, exactly, is that Aang kid not white? o.0

The others, I can see. But Aang? From all the pictures I've seen, he looks whiter than me! And I'm pretty damn pale!

I completely sympathize.

This is nothing more than a bunch of idiots that apparently have nothing better to do with their lives than sit around ruining people's fandom experiences by bitching and whining and wanking about largely overblown 'problems' and feeling all good and righteous about doing so.

If they actually gave a damn, they might do something with their lives. Like get out there and start petitions to change racist laws and policies and go on marches or whatever the fuck else.

But no, they prefer to sit on their asses and get a little thrill every time they pretend they've stood up against racism by whining over escapist entertainment.

I've only seen a few episodes of the original - usually as a result of channel flipping - but after looking at this (http://teaser-trailer.com/2009/05/noah-ringer-as-aang-last-airbender-movie.html), he does actually look like the cartoon character. Now, if they actually made the actor's skin darker (or gave him a fake epicanthic fold (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Epicanthic_fold)) to look like the character, I'd totally understand the outrage. It is important to be undeniably, visibly represented in media - omission only breeds further marginalization - but lets also keep in mind that short of a DNA test, no one can %100 accurately say that he has no Asian in his bloodline. Especially considering the history of Eurasia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mongol_Empire).
