I've never been really into MCU but I'm with you, OP. Especially if it was a relatively low stakes kind of plot (no alien invasion, no world ending and crazy huge bad guy villain) with plenty of humor. No lame attempts to constantly shoehorn in poorly written romances, references to comic book stuff that isn't going to be developed in the movie, or attempted tie-ins to other Marvel series/characters. Bonus points for a hilarious heist plot.

I'd also come back if they brought back Chris Evans as Captain America. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I've not watched anything from the MCU since Endgame.

You know what I secretly always wanted? Let Steve "die" or retire or disappear or whatever, then you have Falcon and Winter Soldier show where its sort of a buddy cop dynamic, and then at the end of the day they come home and Steve is just there sitting on the couch eating a giant bowl of lucky charms or whatever, chilling and giving them shit about whatever he saw about them on the news. Just that he's secretly been living with them the whole time, happily retired and acting as some sort of a house husband - either romantic or not idc.

regular steve or biden!steve? because biden!steve is 100% funnier.

ayrt

While I see where you're going with that and I accept it is hilarious, I refuse to accept Biden!Steve as reality.

(Anonymous) 2023-05-13 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL, I'd be on board with this.

I dunno...the thing I didn't like about Steve's fate was him dropping out when he had the skills/ability to save people now. It could be argued he'd already given up enough, but so have others? Jesus, look at Thor. Peggy was great and all, but him going back in time just hosed her whole separate timeline/story/relationships from Agent Carter also.

This, so much.

I thought that after Stan Lee died that Steve should retire and he gets to be the cameo. Just doing retired/touristy things not noticing the emergency in the background, doing some ridiculous craft or hobby, reading something thematic to the plot, etc etc.

Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaant.

(Anonymous) 2023-05-13 08:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I might have agreed had Falcon and the Winter Solider been remotely good.

+1000

(Anonymous) 2023-05-13 09:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Eh, just ignore it and go from there.

I am but a mortal. If you give me what I deeply, sincerely, desire I will fold like a bereavement card.

(Anonymous) 2023-05-14 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
I wouldn't trust MCU to get them right anymore.

(Anonymous) 2023-05-14 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I feel this. I have all the usual complaints about the quality of most of the recent MCU movies, and I stand by those complaints, but ultimately, if Steve (Cap!Steve, not Biden!Steve) came back, my interest would be significantly restored.

And if Tony came back, I would be back on board so damn fast.

I tried to reserve judgement back in 2019, but even then I was 95% sure the franchise wouldn't be able to rekindle my interest after writing them both out. It just felt finished, to me, and probably would've still felt finished even if Tony and Steve had been written out in ways I was happier about.

The franchise has had enough Tony, IMO. More than enough.

(Anonymous) 2023-05-14 02:57 am (UTC)(link)
I very much disagree. I couldn't feel that the MCU "has had enough" of either Tony or Steve, because IMO they were the central core of the MCU; the twin tentpoles of the franchise. They were both integral to what the MCU was, IMO. With both of them gone, the whole thing feels a bit saggy and formless. Not that I don't love some of the other characters, because I do--but none of the other characters were built to hang the franchise on the way Tony and Steve were, IMO, and furthermore, neither Tony nor Steve were built to be the center on their own. It worked so well because there was two of them, and they each had such tremendous vitality as characters yet were so different.

It’s more than understandable to not like Tony, but that doesn’t mean that everyone agrees with you that there’s been enough of him.

If the choice was between bringing back Tony Stark and letting the MCU die, I'd rather let it die.

Yeah, for me it's just not the MCU without Tony. But losing both Tony and Cap at the same time made it almost impossible to rebound from.

(Anonymous) 2023-05-14 09:31 am (UTC)(link)
I like both Tony and Steve, especially Tony. But I’ve enjoyed the MCU a lot more post-Endgame. I didn’t like Civil War, Infinity War or Endgame in a lot of ways for one, although the last two had their moments. And another possible reason is because while I liked them individually as characters, and their relationships with others, their interactions with each other were always awkward and frustrating to watch for me. Until they make up in Endgame, I guess. But everything about their drama with each other was a boat anchor dragging the overall stories down for me.

Idk, I like that there seems to be more story opportunities with theirs over, even though I completely agree with people who think the way their stories ended was insulting. And I like a lot of the characters that are getting more spotlight now just as much as I like Steve and Tony. Not everything post-Endgame has been my thing, but I’ve regained a lot of enjoyment for the MCU after Endgame was officially over. I do wish Natasha had lived though, because I really wish there could be more than one Black Widow movie.

This was a jumbled mess of a response, I know. But so are my thoughts on this subject.

I never want to see Steve Rogers' smug, fatuous face again.
