Like anon, she's not my favorite ever and I like other female characters more, but she is strong and rather cool. I guess her bashers are rabid Ed/Roy fans? :(

Actually, a while back, I think there was a secret to the effect of hating her because she interferes with Roy/Hughes. (I'd say Hughes's wife and kid were an even bigger impediment, but I suppose they could focus their shipping on pre-Ishbal.)

Are there really that many people that hate her? I've actually never heard of anyone hating her, to be honest--which is good, because I would also probably be irrationally offended. I got ridiculously angry when Bradley said something about her being "Mustang's lapdog."

She's my favorite fictional character, period, and a huge part of my fandom identity, but once I got over my initial anger when Bradley said that, I realized that he was absolutely right. Awfully condescending, but right.

I've never heard of anyone bashing her either, actually. The only two reasons I can think of that someone would are stupid, too--either because she gets in the way of their Roy slash pairing, or as backlash from her popularity. (Personally, I squeed like hell when I found out she had come in third in the last two Gangan popularity polls, but maybe others didn't. Still, no reason to bash.)

I'm not in the fandom but read the manga/watch the anime, and think she is OK as a character. She's so obviously meant for Roy that it takes a little of the mystery out of it, but hey, if Roy likes her, I can accept that. :)

As a slash writer I say that Riza and Olivia knock my socks off. They are pure awesome. Cool under fire, competent, smart, realistic, unflappable, gorgeous, what's not to like about them. Except when they are turned into dewey eyed innocents or worse, harpies, by the fic writers.

:| Winry gets bashed waaaay more than Riza, which is annoying and unfair. I think it's the outfit, which is stupid and unfair. I mean... okay, she wears a pretty... revealing shirt for most of the anime, but so does a certain other character and nobody's complaining about him. *rolls eyes*
