Because she's less famous/known and therefore less clout gained to claim as one of your group.

I mean I wish it weren't as simple or stupid as that but it pretty much is.

This is speaking as someone who would be 100% fine with black Cleopatra in fiction or whatever.

Is she really less famous period? I definitely grew up hearing about her (obviously, yes, Cleopatra has the most fame) but Nefertiti was the second Egyptian queen I had heard about growing up. And it was in the same context of growing up hearing about Cleopatra as an African queen (West African queens I learned about later, but we did learn about some kings).

But I think it would be amazing to have a movie or series about her.

yeah I'm gonna press X to doubt that Nefertiti is less known than Cleopatra. I'd go with equally. Hatshepsut, now, while an even more fascinating tale, is truly lesser known.

Agreed. And her life would make for an amazing adaptation as well.

OP

Maybe I'm thinking about it from a historical POV but the idea that Nefertiti is less famous is... mind boggling. She's one of the most famous female historical figures in Ancient Egyptian history. Right up there with Hatshepsut, who ruled as pharaoh. History during her lifetime is considered incredibly significant because of the shift to monotheism (this is huge by Ancient Egyptian standards) and moving the capital to Amarna, as well as the various mysteries and unknown things about that time period.

But I guess Cleopatra gets better publicity... :(

Then this would have been a great chance to make an actual black Egyptian queen like Hapshepsut famous. But, y'know, Americans.

I'm not as concerned about the racial makeup in the new adaptation of Cleopatra. I wanna see if someone finally did her justice, depicted her as the badass multilingual, fleet-commanding queen who managed to keep the Roman Empire on its heels that she was, rather than yet another portrayal of her as a scheming, vapid seductress.
