Because she's less famous/known and therefore less clout gained to claim as one of your group.

I mean I wish it weren't as simple or stupid as that but it pretty much is.

This is speaking as someone who would be 100% fine with black Cleopatra in fiction or whatever.

Is she really less famous period? I definitely grew up hearing about her (obviously, yes, Cleopatra has the most fame) but Nefertiti was the second Egyptian queen I had heard about growing up. And it was in the same context of growing up hearing about Cleopatra as an African queen (West African queens I learned about later, but we did learn about some kings).

But I think it would be amazing to have a movie or series about her.

yeah I'm gonna press X to doubt that Nefertiti is less known than Cleopatra. I'd go with equally. Hatshepsut, now, while an even more fascinating tale, is truly lesser known.

Agreed. And her life would make for an amazing adaptation as well.

OP

Maybe I'm thinking about it from a historical POV but the idea that Nefertiti is less famous is... mind boggling. She's one of the most famous female historical figures in Ancient Egyptian history. Right up there with Hatshepsut, who ruled as pharaoh. History during her lifetime is considered incredibly significant because of the shift to monotheism (this is huge by Ancient Egyptian standards) and moving the capital to Amarna, as well as the various mysteries and unknown things about that time period.

But I guess Cleopatra gets better publicity... :(

Then this would have been a great chance to make an actual black Egyptian queen like Hapshepsut famous. But, y'know, Americans.

I'm not as concerned about the racial makeup in the new adaptation of Cleopatra. I wanna see if someone finally did her justice, depicted her as the badass multilingual, fleet-commanding queen who managed to keep the Roman Empire on its heels that she was, rather than yet another portrayal of her as a scheming, vapid seductress.

She would make for some awesome storytelling.

If it's as you say, I think you've convinced me, anon. And I kind of hope you'll hang around in the thread and tell us more about Nefertiti.

There's so much, nonny! Alongside her husband, she ruled Egypt and had more power than Great Royal Wives typically had. Lots of art shows them both worshipping the sun god Ra, along with their children. However, we know nothing about her death. For someone who was so significant in her lifetime, she just disappears from the historical records at some point. It's been speculated that she merely passed away from an illness, or fell into disgrace somehow and mention of her was avoided/destroyed. But! Around the time that she disappears, a co-regent to the throne named "Neferneferuaten" appears. So one theory is that Neferneferuaten is Nefertiti, who took on a new name as pharaoh, which wasn't unheard of at the time. (Hatshepsut did the same.)

Another is that a later pharaoh named Smenkhkare (also a mysterious person we only know a little about) who ruled for a short period and perhaps was co-regent with Ahkenaten was also Nefertiti under a different name, and perhaps, dressed as a man. This isn't as unusual as it sounds, because Hatshepsut also styled herself as male, perhaps to help legitimize her rule as pharaoh.

It's all up for debate, because the historical record is incomplete and confusing. There's even a mummy that people speculate might be Nefertiti, but that too, cannot be confirmed. That's what I mean when I said you could get really creative with her story, far more so than you could with Cleopatra, IMO.

AYRT

Oh, that is tantalizing, to say the least. So many possibilities!

Another interesting adjacent rabbit hole is the tomb KV55:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KV55

Its occupant was originally identified as a woman due to their large hips, but was later determined to be a man. DNA evidence suggests it's either Akhenaten or Smenkhkare, and if it's the latter, it would rule out the theory that Nefertiti succeeded her husband. As it stands, folks can't seem to agree on the body's age. It's pretty fascinating stuff.

Hell yeah, I'd love to see some historical fiction set in the Amarna period. I've also personally wanted a movie about Hatshepsut for years now.

Yes to a Hatshepsut movie. She's awesome.

Have toy read any of Paul Doherty's mysteries set during the reign of Hatshepsut (who is called by the alternate name Hatusu)? The sleuth is the chief judge of the court of Thebes. I have no idea whether they are at all accurate to the period but I liked them, and Hatusu is a force to be reckoned with!

Also I think more storytelling can benefit from making multiple "AUs". You can show history going this way. Or this way. Or this way. All in one episode. It would drive home that we often enough can only speculate about the past.

I'm always down for more Egyptian historical things.
