(Anonymous) 2023-05-29 08:55 am (UTC)(link)Though I guess I'm also on the line between your and the secret op's arbitrary categories. I make some of my cosplays, when I feel like I have the skill to do so, and comm the ones I don't, because I'm plus sized and the rest of my cosplay group are all skinny and conventionally attractive and guess what? I have to have a costume that looks 2-3 times as good as theirs to get any attention at all, and putting in the effort only to get ignored and left out of hall photos even when we're all dressed in the same series sucks.
You and/or secret op give the impression you would probably say that since I have some ability I should just attempt all my costumes and be proud of the effort, should learn something new each time a costume is intimidating, something like that but nah. Fuck that. Making a cosplay costs just as much as commissioning one these days, often more, and I want to look good when it's done, not mediocre and spend my con demoralized.

I would like to see more people cultivate their skills but honestly? Knowing your limitations and doing what you can to work around them including commissioning is more than valid. It's smart. I've given talks at cons about curating your experience because, again, there's only so much you can control so take back that control where you can. If you don't like me being honest about what I've seen in person and experienced over the last 23 years, that's fine. I have been in your shoes, I've been ignored and shat on and mocked online on flame posts about bad cosplay. I've watched people at cons shit on my fellow photoshoot partners and I've reamed out assholes who tried to push friends out of frame. I may agree with "I don't know how to talk shop with people who bought a throwaway costume on Aliexpress to try to get more Instagram likes" without being totally down with OP's angry fuck you, so...take that as you will.
