Late to this, sorry, but I feel you too, honestly. Getting ignored at photoshoots isn't about how good your costume it but entirely about how attractive you are and it SUCKS SO FUCKING HARD. I've said since the beginning when I was a shit sewist: you can't control other people around you, so wrest control wherever you can.

I would like to see more people cultivate their skills but honestly? Knowing your limitations and doing what you can to work around them including commissioning is more than valid. It's smart. I've given talks at cons about curating your experience because, again, there's only so much you can control so take back that control where you can. If you don't like me being honest about what I've seen in person and experienced over the last 23 years, that's fine. I have been in your shoes, I've been ignored and shat on and mocked online on flame posts about bad cosplay. I've watched people at cons shit on my fellow photoshoot partners and I've reamed out assholes who tried to push friends out of frame. I may agree with "I don't know how to talk shop with people who bought a throwaway costume on Aliexpress to try to get more Instagram likes" without being totally down with OP's angry fuck you, so...take that as you will.
