I have that same issue. I"m a very asexual female who loves beautiful women and loves to draw them, but I'm always worried people will make assumptions. It is possible to appreciate the human form without sexualizing it, I just wish more people would realize that.

As a gay man, I couldn't agree with you any more.

You stated it perfectly.

They are beautiful, but do nothing for my libido.

A lot of them are pretty amazing sculptures, and you have to admire the craftmanship that goes into making such an accurate 3d representation of a 2d drawing.

Gotta say one thing, and that is that I agree ever so much on the point about Oh!Great. When the man wants to, he can draw some DAMN pretty people, both men and women. His women are gorgeous and his men? Just makes me god godDAMN that's how I wanna look. Say what yo want about his questionable story-telling abilities, madness and penchant for fanservice, but the man knows how to draw pretty.

It looks very unreal (in a nobody-looks-like-that-without-copius-amounts-of-plastic-surgery way), but it is very pretty. Especially what I can see of the hands.

You obviously have no graps of what kind of rape these figures represent.

they are not made for you, they are made for the scum to further dehumanize our gender.

GTFO of life. scumbag.

I don't think there's anything wrong with that. I'm a straight girl, and I prefer drawing women to men. I find them more fun to draw, personally, because curvy lines > angular lines, and they can be just beautiful.

On the other hand, I sympathize, because I sometimes wonder if people get the wrong idea, and it's very sad that because of our culture, there's a very hard line to walk between appreciating and celebrating beauty, and objectifying it.

[identity profile] authoressarktos.livejournal.com 2009-06-09 10:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Actually, I agree. I think it's an artistic thing. I'm a straight, more-or-less asexual woman who finds these figures interesting for the same reasons.

[identity profile] kinosino.livejournal.com 2009-06-09 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Goddammit, yes. Sometimes, people should be allowed to like things because they look cool.

[identity profile] bamf-girl.livejournal.com 2009-06-09 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I've got a few of the One Piece: Portraits of Pirates ones, and sometimes I just like to stare at them, because they're so amazing. All the craftsmanship and love that goes into making the figures is really awesome.

And hey, as long as you realize that no amount of dieting and plastic surgery will make you look like an anime babe, I don't think there's any problem with looking at them. ;D

[identity profile] pimmy.livejournal.com 2009-06-09 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
THIS THIS THIS THIS AUGH

I keep getting accused of being a lolicon because of... various figurines on my desk.
I just think they're gorgeous. The proportions, the curves, the perfect representation of the 2D form into 3D... I can't get enough! I keep wishing I could draw such lovely little bodies ;A; And as an artist, the craftsmanship blows me away with every big release.

[identity profile] weallfallout.livejournal.com 2009-06-10 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
Oh gosh, this. I always get a lot of people asking me why I don't want figures of guys. It's not only because I find women more aesthetically pleasing, but because there are very few figures of male characters, and even fewer that have the same quality and attention to detail as the female character figures. I really hate that there's no way for me to own most of the really nice figures I want without looking like a creepy pervert.

[identity profile] nakotaco.livejournal.com 2009-06-10 02:23 am (UTC)(link)
This is pretty much the only reason I keep buying gashapon. I like to sit there and staaaaaare at all the incredible detail in some of them.

(Anonymous) 2009-06-10 03:02 am (UTC)(link)
Only thing wrong is her boobs. They look so... Weird!

[identity profile] wicked-seraph.livejournal.com 2009-06-10 04:34 am (UTC)(link)
I couldn't agree more. I'm a heterosexual female, but I've always preferred to draw the female figure - not is it more familiar and natural for me, as a female myself, to draw and visualize, there's just something beautiful about a woman's curves to me. Unfortunately, people are far too fond of equating nudity with sexuality (i.e., that one cannot exist without the other), and end up getting the wrong idea. I really don't care either way whether they think I'm gay, bi, or straight, but it saddens me that I can't appreciate the beauty of the human form without having someone make assumptions about my sexual preferences. :/

[identity profile] bleed-peroxide.livejournal.com 2009-06-10 04:36 am (UTC)(link)
I have a similar issue. I'm a lover of aesthetics, and find the female body to be beautiful. (I'm a straight female, by the way. I can still appreciate if a woman is beautiful! ♥) I love little figurines of women, such as faeries or something, because often the artisan puts a lot of love into the artwork, and it looks absolutely lovely. But the moment you try to draw something like that, people assume things about you just because you're comfortable drawing the human body with all its curves and such (I like drawing curvier bodies--it's natural and I think it looks a lot prettier).

*sigh* Whatever. People can assume what they want about me. :D

[identity profile] polarbearparty.livejournal.com 2009-06-10 08:15 am (UTC)(link)

I know where you're coming from.
When did it become a crime to appreciate the human body?

I can't even go to the Art Institute w/o my friends/family looking at me weird for staring at paintings of naked ladies haha

[identity profile] kitsune-no-ame.livejournal.com 2009-06-10 10:37 am (UTC)(link)
Don't you dare being ashamed of your love for female figures!
I have tons of those (and plan to have more naked ones once I completely move out), they don't turn me on as real women do, I just like to look at them. I also buy figures of shows/games I don't know zilch about, just for the pretty. And I don't think there is anything wrong about this.

Ahaha, me too Anon! I wouldn't care about owning them, but looking at how they're sculpted and wanting to draw them is a great feeling.

:) If you're interested, there's a magazine/book series called 'Replicant' and it's just pages of anime/manga figurine photos. The series vary, but I do know they have figurines from Ikki Tousen in some issues too.

[identity profile] westerdrumlins.livejournal.com 2009-06-12 04:38 am (UTC)(link)
I think it's beautiful, too.

[identity profile] chipped-diamond.livejournal.com 2009-06-12 05:51 am (UTC)(link)
Totally with you on that. I really like looking at female bodies, especially the wonderfully proportional and idealistic ones in a few mangas/anime/games, even more than male ones, but really, it's only in an aesthetic way. I find them alluring, but not at all arousing.

The only difference though is that I intentionally make myself out to be a perv. Just because it's fun. xD
