You're right, but watch everyone here claim that canon queer characters are 'bad' to justify their obsession with cis-het white dudes who aren't even slightly subtextually queer.

I mean there's literally nothing wrong with being obsessed with characters who aren't canonically or even subtextually queer, outside of the way that it interacts with Pride

Thank you!

There's always someone who wants to piss in fandom's cheerios. Like just let people enjoy their fake handsome man relationships!

True enough. When I see bellyaching about people getting ladyboners for "white, cis men," I see more of the double standard where men are expected to have a picky aesthetic preference, while women are shamed for preferring to fantasize about good looking guys, as opposed to dumpy, homely ones.

I know you didn't mean it this way, but the juxtaposition of "white cis men" vs "dumpy homely ones" is...unfortunate phrasing.

NAYRT
Yeah, that could've been phrased better. I think the people complaining that women are shallow bitches for liking hot young guys and the people complaining that slash shippers are all white straight cis girls fetishizing gay men because lol whitecock ships amiright are usually two different groups.

Let’s face it, most of the canon queer characters they would be compared to are cishet white or cishet Japanese. I’m sure there’s something out there with a black trans woman, but it’s not getting fandom posts on Tumblr.

Well, Orange Is the New Black and its black trans woman were popular for a long time, but fandoms come and go. And yeah, "only care about the hot white cis guys" that AYRT is talking about is very much a strawman.

Well, 9-1-1 has a canon Black lesbian couple, Hen and Karen, (and Josh, a canonically gay White man who is a supporting character), but I would bet that most of the fandom is focused on two male characters have only canonically dated women, Buck, a White man, and Eddie, a Latino man, who a lot of fandom headcanon as bi.

9-1-1 Lone Star fandom is probably a little better since the juggernaut pairing is the canon gay male couple who are and White and Latino. But I bet we won't hear anywhere near as much about Paul, the canon Black trans man.

It is absolutely fine for fandom to like who they like, of course, but maybe for celebrating Pride month and the strides made in media, it would be a good thing to focus on all of the canon LGBTQ+ characters.

OP

Yes! That's what I meant. I like headcanons and have them too. I also don't relate to a lot of Canon representation. But I think Canon characters need more recognition during pride, mostly because it's not only about how relatable they are, but how they push for more representation and because of it deserve to be celebrated for it over a non-canon-queer character that 9/10 is already confirmed as cishet anyway.

No "claim", in general Hollywood writes shit queer characters. I've basically stopped watching western media all together so I can get some actually good queer characters.

Same, anon. First contact with Japanese media at ... oh, about twelve years old, and I decamped forever. Of course, not all of it is good, but the part that is, wow. There's no comparison.

I mostly like lesbians, tell me how many of those aren't fetish bait lmao

(Anonymous) 2023-06-11 09:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Like when I think of canon f/f ships I think of mostly kids' cartoons before I can think of anything in a show for my age demographic where I'm A) not worried about a character being killed/assaulted horribly, B) not looking at a straight guy's fantasy, C) not just too fuckin' depressed by the whole thing. So... it's not that the pickings are slim so much as that like... it's dire out there and also I hate the L Word?

(Anonymous) 2023-06-11 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Pretty much. If you aren't in it for your fave dying or her love interest dying, you're probably looking at fetish fuel.
