Fandom rarely cares about canon. Canon is boring, it's already there! Headcanons and imaginary shipping has no restraints and offers a lot more room for creativity. Plus, they can't 'ruin' the relationship for you if it's not actually canon!

But I get you.

This only tracks with m/m fandom, m/f fandom loves canon and always has done, like sure there's fanon m/f but most bigger m/f ships are canon. Also in my experience while fanon f/f ships do exist when there is canon f/f those fans really care about that too.

I disagree. I've seen mostly hate for canon m/f ships and lots of fic fix-its for them.

Can't really speak for f/f fandom since it's not my wheelhouse.

Yeah, M/F fandom gave us Zutara and Reylo.

(Not really a secret: I feel like if I’d gotten into the Star Wars sequels, I probably would have shipped Reylo.)

As for f/f, a lot of it is taking Class S garbage where the girls “graduate” into het relationships and fix-ficcing it into actual f/f romance.

LOL, no. Buffy and Spike (or Angel), Mulder and Scully? There are plenty of canon het ships that people love and fandoms love. New Girl's Nick and Jess?

It helps that those had long roads before they became canon, had will-they/won't they energy, chemistry, etc. That sort of thing leads to excitement and fic!

I mean, I would have shipped those characters if they hadn't gotten together in canon, too! I have a lot of slash ships, but certainly do enjoy a good het ship.

I would actually say with the exception of Nick/Jess that my experience in the other fandoms is you had an equal if not more amount of fans that hated those canon pairings. Not saying they didn't have their support, but there were a whole lot of fic that ignored the pairings because they did not like them. Lots of heated discussions on both sides!

I'm disputing that they had "mostly hate." But I tend to avoid people who HATE my ships.

See, I think you're hitting the nail on the head here-- the canon m/f ships that have the most love are ones that had amazing chemistry before they ever got together. So when it comes to non-canon m/m or f/f ships, people are looking for the actors who have chemistry and the characters who have watchable relationships... and that doesn't always line up with which characters are canonically queer! And with m/f ships, where even if that energy is accidental, showrunners often push that direction once they see the chemistry and the fan reactions, with gay ships we tend to not expect to see it go canon, we just want to play in the sandbox.

This is correct wrt f/f in my experience - being canon makes a big difference for f/f shippers

I love my one (1) canon m/m ship.

TBH I think even with m/m fandom, they're very willing to do non-canon ships but being canon is still a positive. Just look at OFMD.
