(Anonymous) 2023-06-21 12:25 pm (UTC)(link)Yeah, I saw the same thing but on Tumblr, which ... doesn't mean much.
I also like the variant where it's just any secret / emotion in general, and the hanahaki stops when you confess / admit it.

(Anonymous) 2023-06-21 02:20 pm (UTC)(link)I've never read a hanahaki story with the confession variant. ...Which doesn't mean much either.
Though I can't see how it makes much difference since protagonist suffering in silence is the main draw of this.

(Anonymous) 2023-06-21 02:31 pm (UTC)(link)It's less creepy PUA/incel when some OTHER person doesn't HAVE to fall in love to save their life. Just stop being a little bitch and confess like an adult. Problem solved, with no requirements on the other person to respond positively.

(Anonymous) 2023-06-21 03:12 pm (UTC)(link)IF it was originated in the Japanese fandom, which I assume it was, the confession version was the only version I ever saw years ago, when it exploded in the novel section of pixiv. (for manga fandom I'm more into japanese fics than english ones)
It was a metaphor for words not said that slowly kills your true self.
You can see this trope a lot also in manga or strips where a character, usually a tsundere, has flowers/hearts around them to signal the fact that they have feelings that they don't say but only think/show. That's the fluffier version of hanahaki I think.
The stories usually end up with a good ending of "THE FEELING IS REQUIRED NOW WE ARE TOGETHER", but the required love is not what solve the hanahaki disease. It's saying the words.
IDK though. Maybe it was originally invented in the western fandom and then adapted into the Japanese one. Who knows.
