I know I was harsh but fuck, I'm tired of people trying to police other people's smut preferences by vaguely shaming them for not being inclusive/progressive enough for their tastes (see "ew you nasties just want to see white dicks touch").

This comment makes me hope that the next Language Files video explores the linguistic implications of phrasing such as "I know I _____, but...." and "I'm not _____, but...." and how this all impacts (online) discussion/debate/argument.

Pfff, so nobody is allowed anymore to give a reason for why they phrased something a certain way because reasons?

They are, but certain phrasing you used sounds a bit like when people say “I don’t mean to be __, but...”, which is followed by them being exactly what the blank was.

Your “I know I was harsh, but...” can be just read as the lead-up to your explanation, which is how I read it, to be clear. But it could also sound like the other thing I mentioned, and thus come off not so great. That’s what ayrt meant, I’m pretty sure.

I think they might have been joking a little bit though, but I could be wrong.

The other anon

I was serious about my response. I want people to think more carefully about how they use the 'but' conjunction and think a linguistic video will drive the point home better that a text monologue.

Gotcha, my bad for assuming.

Most of the assumptions you made were correct. The only part that was not was the joking part. I tend to not joke online, especially when I'm anonymous.

AYRT

Given how phrasing is a key method of developing tone in text, I'd say that being up front about why a statement is phrased a certain is more important than ever. Such a practice could also reduce the number of bad faith arguing accusations.

I admit I had to contemplate your response for a bit. The "nobody is allowed" portion threw me off.

Sorry, I was assuming that this was another argument in the vein of "hurr you say 'you're not racist but' so that means you're racist" as a way to dismiss someone.

I agree! I believe original comment came from frustration, but still I don't like being judged for my preferences in porn

But 9/10 that is exactly what people want. It's pretty okay for people to be frustrated the fandom skews very white and het (and yeah, sorry, but 75% of gay fanfic is written for straight girls to get their rocks off to dicks touching). And every time someone brings up that maybe people should question why they ship only white people or a majority white people, especially when there are PoC RIGHT THERE in the same canons, they're screamed down.

Because it's none of your business why they ship the white dudes over the POC option unless they force you to do it as well. Nobody stopping you from performatively shipping the POC characters if that's so important to you.

Who died and appointed you the guardian of other people's morality? It's none of your business what other people ship, or why they ship it, unless they are insisting you ship it too.

I'd rather know where they got that 75% statistic. Almost everyone in fandom who reads or writes gay fic is queer. Cishet women literally do not care about gay fic positively or negatively, it is just not on their radar.

There's a lot of m/m slash written by straight women, and there always has been. However, given that it's fiction, I don't see why that's a problem.

However, they are making a LOT of assumptions and ignoring the large parts of fandom that are not involved in writing transformative works.

I just wish they'd put on their big kid pants, grow the hell up and realize that no one owes them or their faves fanworks.
