(Anonymous) 2023-07-05 12:26 am (UTC)(link)Unfortunately, this seems to be something spreading overall. It is why I do not engage in fandoms anymore. They rarely feel like places to gush about your canons or write theories and stories, and more as if to vent on how things changed from your childhood days. Worse if the reason for their complaints is because women or minorities take a central role.
I don't know if YouTube is to blame, but more and more I come to agree with the saying 'the internet was a mistake'.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-05 01:00 am (UTC)(link)I think modern social media is to blame, especially tumblr and twitter. They both have algorithms that work on pushing the most controversial things because that promotes engagement. Everyone is in one big forum with no moderation and few controls, so everyone can be as much of an asshole as they want with no way to stop them.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-05 01:14 am (UTC)(link)But Tumblr? I knew of the nature of reblogs, but I never knew it was subject to an algorithm of its own to promote controversial content. They profit from people screaming at eachother, and the angrier people they get, the more they win. Jesus Christ, no wonder things suck so much ass, now.
Smaller communities are miles easier to moderate than large ones. The larger a community, the more likely people will do or say nasty shit.
Re: ayrt
(Anonymous) 2023-07-05 01:21 am (UTC)(link)Tumblr has an algorithm but it works about as well as the rest of the site, so most people don't use it. You can just turn it off or never look at it and go on your merry way. There's also XKit.
OP
(Anonymous) 2023-07-05 01:24 am (UTC)(link)Individual forums depended on moderation, but at least you could have people who were willing to take action on bad actors. The big sites either enable them because they drive traffic or coddle them because if they don’t they’ll be accused of censorship.
That’s assuming they aren’t bought up by a hostile government or billionaire like LJ or Twitter were. That’s why I prefer the Mastodon approach.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-05 02:15 am (UTC)(link)exposing myself a bit but... Transformers and Bionicle, Bionicle was the one that was able to have a complete pushback.
AYRT
(Anonymous) 2023-07-05 02:20 am (UTC)(link)I was a Star Wars fan. That was kind of a ground zero for this kind of thing, along with Ghostbusters.
Re: AYRT
(Anonymous) 2023-07-05 02:57 am (UTC)(link)Hasn't this been raging in Star Wars at least since Disney decided that Rey was more force-strong than Kylo? Or am I missing something?

(Anonymous) 2023-07-05 02:58 am (UTC)(link)Re: AYRT
(Anonymous) 2023-07-05 04:50 pm (UTC)(link)All of the strange discourse in Transformers fandom these days seems to revolve around the supposed prefix "Trans". All the right wing weirdos are hyper focused on that.
