My last two books have been duds. Currently reading a nonfic book to mix it up - The Four Lost Cities: a secret history of the Urban Age by Annalee Newitz. I'm not hating it but I'm not enthralled either.

Whatcha reading FS? Or what was the last really good book you read.

Reflections by Mark Avery(for work), and Tom Brown's Schooldays. Figured it was about time I caught up classic lit.

Andre Leon Talley's memoir was pretty good.

The Nightmare Stacks by Charles Stross is what I'm reading now, and I'm loving it so far.

vorkosigan saga

about to start the first book in the series. i'm kind of meh about it, but a hopeful kind of meh.

of the last few books I've read I'd say Remnant Population by Elizabeth Moon has been at the top. Very slow paced but enjoyable. I really loved the bitter old lady protagonist.

The Vokosigan series can be a little hit or miss but overall it's one of my favorites. Shards of Honor isn't my favorite of the series, though. I prefer Miles' adventures, but Barrayar (which features Cordelia, the main protagonist of SoH) is excellent.

DA
The Warrior's Apprentice is great, and my favorite in the series!

I'm currently reading Blue Descent by David Wood which is an action/adventure type thing about a group of treasure hunters, and All Fired Up by Morticia Knight which is a romance with first responders in Las Vegas. Blue Descent is pretty good and I'm looking forward to seeing what happens next while All Fired Up is kind of boring so far, which is suprising because I sort of expected it to be the other way around.

And I'm thinking of finding a mystery/thriller to start soon too just for some variety.

Do you have any Reading Goals?

(Anonymous) 2023-07-09 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
Just posting this under books because it's related? Idk. Curious if anyone else has yearly reading goals or does the goodreads reading challenge and how you're doing on it.

I am doing the goodreads challenge and made my goal 24 books for the year. I've read 17 so far.

I normally do 52, one a week. I've met it the last several years except last year, when I only read 42. This year I vowed to read more, so I decided to do 62 to keep with the twos because why not. I've only read 29 so far so I'm a bit behind but I should have some more free time coming up soon so I'm hoping I can catch up.

I use Goodreads for recs and reviews but for actually keeping track of what I read/reading goals, I use an app called My Reading Record (which isn't a great name, but it's a good app!)

Dang I'm impressed! I have a few learning disabilities and reading is a chore (a chore I enjoy!) so that plus a busy schedule means I just am never going to make numbers like a book a week. It used to bother me, but now I just do me and am happily impressed when others have the talent and capacity for more.

I picked 50 for the year because it seemed like a nice reasonable number but the person doing 52 makes more sense lol!

I am at 44 so far.

Also adding that I use Storygraph and not Goodreads because I find Storygraph a plainer/nicer interface and I like being able to review in 0.25 star increments.

I'm finding these numbers dubious. The general level of reading and viewing comprehension in this community does not suggest a population that reads more than a couple books a year.

Man the trolling is strong on this post. I wonder of you are all just one bitter killjoy or if for some reason this post just attracted the trolls.

Twitter’s dead and Reddit’s dying. They had to go somewhere.

I broke my reading goal up into types of books because I wanted to have more variety in what I read, so 2 novels, 2 non-fiction, 2 graphic novels, 2 novels in the language I'm learning. I made my goals kind of low because I wanted to reach them without without much pressure, and so that I can extend/alter them once they're done.

Currently reading The House of Brides by Jane Cockram and it's very... interesting? I am not quite sure if I like it yet, like the story/mysteries seem interesting but the writing also has a taste 'look how clever this plot line is' which I am not a fan of.

Anne Perry and the Murder of the Century, by Peter Graham. It's about that Heavenly Creatures murder in New Zealand, where two teenage girls murdered one of the girl's mothers. It was a huge thing in New Zealand, and the girl whose mother wasn't murdered grew up and became a famous best selling mystery author.

I'm currently reading The Founding, the first Gaunt's Ghosts omnibus, by Dan Abnett. It's the first three novels in the Warhammer 40k series about Ibram Gaunt and his men. I'd heard the first novel was a struggle to get through but I'm enjoying it, even though it doesn't feel super Warhammer-y. XD
