> Not until awful people who were already inclined to be bullies realized that they could use social justice and representation as weapons to attack other fans who disagreed with them or who didn't like the things they liked.

And that took all of, what, two seconds?

What gets me is how long it took everyone else to understand what was going on and start pushing back against it. And how slow it feels to get that ball rolling. Because what you're describing is what abusers do, and it's what anyone can do, if they just ask themselves "how can this be exploited?" It's not a secret. It's not even hard to stumble across.

Assuming a well-intentioned ideology is impossible to abuse, and must not be challenged or questioned in any way because it's just so perfect as-is, is a recipe for being manipulated.

"Everyone knows what the beginnings of abuse look like, so why didn't you recognize the signs of your abuse before it was too late?"

AYRT

I'm not blaming any particular person for not seeing this sooner. What I was trying to express is that the social space that is fandom matters to me, and it's been painful being treated like anyone who can see this is a problem must be evil. When being able to tell this is an exploitable vulnerability can also indicate past experience with abuse.

You’re not wrong at all, but the benefit of doubt also exists. Some kids’ hearts are in a good place and they also need help so as to not be TOO hard on themselves because of fandom activism. Other kids are just bullies or 50-something year old guys disguised as kids who just want to troll and stir shit up because their idea of “fun” is making a point that “there’s too much social Justice nowadays” by pushing discourse to unreasonable extents so ehh depends.

That's certainly true. And IME, people are usually on firmer ground when they're setting limits about behavior, as opposed to making assumptions about the character of the person transgressing.
