The dude's wig looks good in that screencap. The woman's wig is at least passable in the screencap. I assume they look a lot worse in other shots, and/or in motion?

I've worked with enough wigs to be able to tell even in a screencap that the texture is off - even knowing that natural hair can be coarse and frizzy, there's a mental/visual disconnect when a wig that could be much nicer-looking appears texturally rough. The tone of white-blond also doesn't work with the actors' complexions - makeup should have balanced that shit.

But yeah, I'm guessing that it looks worse in motion, or closeups reveal the poorly glued-down lace-fronts. Or, it's just so jarringly clear that they're wigs and it breaks suspension of disbelief. I've seen a lot of half-assed wigs in fantasy lately and I know makeup artists can do better, so I'm basically out here wondering who signed off on the halfassery or genuinely thought it looked good before the cameras rolled.

They kind of have to be white-blonde given that the entire family has white blonde hair.

DA
But there are different types of white-blonde. Just using a more ashen tone would have worked wonders for a less artificial look.

Could you give examples of this? Like, characters I can look up to contrast what they did with their hair and makeup? Because I'm interested, but I don't know what you mean in terms of "this works" and "that looks wrong."

It highly depends on the skin tone, especially on the undertones, like more yellow, pink or fairly neutral. Different shades of white blond/platinum look better or worse with certain skin tones.

I looked for examples - while I didn't find any characters, I found this video: https://youtu.be/i92FbnSQ-0s
Maybe this helps!

AYRT

Whoa, thank you. That's dramatic. And it does help!

Yes! Toning would have been amazing here!

I mean, if they'd dyed their hair those colors then they'd still have the coarse/frizzy textural problem because the amount of bleach necessary to get your hair that pale wrecks the texture, so I don't see how the wigs are somehow a worse option.

That's what I was thinking, too. But it sounds like they could have gone with better wigs. Which, considering they're trying to pretend the characters' hair is just like that, and not dyed, I guess is a fair point.

Fantasy realism for the win?

Yeah, hers pings as slightly heavy and unnatural, but not to the point where it's particularly distracting to me. His hair though looks like it could 100% be growing out of his head, IMO. Like sure, if you have a bunch of wig-dressing experience then the tells are going to be more obvious, but that's not most people. *shrugs*

Not a GoT fan at all; I just feel like the wigs aren't nearly bad enough to be a big deal. Clearly YMMV though.

Yeah, you've got a point. It's very much subjective, sometimes you can just see something "off" but not be able to articulate what it is. To be fair, I have seen a LOT worse than this. These are, as someone above said, passable.
