Excuse you? I had hair down to the back of my knees in high school and college, and waist length well into my thirties. I didn't usually put part of it in front of my shoulders because it would get in the way, but aside from that, what's supposed to be "daft" or "stupid" about her wig? Or about the guy's hair, for that matter?

(Anonymous) 2023-07-10 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I think they mean that they’re fake looking to them, and that’s why they say they look “daft” or “stupid” looking?

+1

(Anonymous) 2023-07-10 10:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I guess? But that part seemed pretty normal for fantasy, to me.

....wh...what part of the secret said anything about length??

(Anonymous) 2023-07-10 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Right? I don't know if ayrt is trolling or if they're genuinely so bad at reading while simultaneously being so deeply insecure that a secret about stupid looking wigs in a fantasy TV show makes them sit upright and go, "OMG, OP is clearly calling me out for having long hair!!!!!"

I never understand when people say a wig is bad, unless it's like party city bad. I just genuinely can't tell, even with the Cdrama wigs people complain about. It all looks real to me, or passable enough that I don't really notice. Not like we're looking for perfect realism anyway, what with the CGI dragons and all.

Haha, wow. Maybe take a deep breath, I doubt this is a personal attack on you or long haired people. HoD suffers from a similar problem as GoT - it's hard to depict Targaryens as a family known for silver/white/very pale blonde hair when you're working in live action and actors can't realistically dye their hair that light without serious damage, not to mention inconvenience. So it's gotta be wigs... and unless they're expensive and very well done, the wigs are going to be obvious and kind of hilariously bad.

What a weird comment. I also had hair to my knees in my early adult life, and never once did I assume this secret was referring to that period in my life, much less putting it down.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-10 10:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I have long hair as well anon and I can't even begin to understand wtf you're on. Nothing about the secret mentioned length, one of the pics is even of short hair.

Genuinely incredible response lol

(Anonymous) 2023-07-11 04:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Bzuh? What? Because it's not the length (or lack thereof for the dude) that makes them look like shitty wigs? I've always had long hair and I have zero clue how you got a mortal insult to long hair out of this secret. This is worse than "how dare you say we piss on the poor" level reading comprehension.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-10 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)
The dude's wig looks good in that screencap. The woman's wig is at least passable in the screencap. I assume they look a lot worse in other shots, and/or in motion?

(Anonymous) 2023-07-10 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I've worked with enough wigs to be able to tell even in a screencap that the texture is off - even knowing that natural hair can be coarse and frizzy, there's a mental/visual disconnect when a wig that could be much nicer-looking appears texturally rough. The tone of white-blond also doesn't work with the actors' complexions - makeup should have balanced that shit.

But yeah, I'm guessing that it looks worse in motion, or closeups reveal the poorly glued-down lace-fronts. Or, it's just so jarringly clear that they're wigs and it breaks suspension of disbelief. I've seen a lot of half-assed wigs in fantasy lately and I know makeup artists can do better, so I'm basically out here wondering who signed off on the halfassery or genuinely thought it looked good before the cameras rolled.

They don't actually look like bad wigs to me, just bad bleach jobs. But maybe they look worse in action? But then I've been told I'm rubbish at telling if something is a wig or not.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-10 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Bad wigs can be really, really bad sometimes.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-10 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I can see it when it's pointed out, but when I'm watching I almost never think about stuff like whether the wigs are bad. I tend to get very immersed when I watch anything, after a few minutes of noticing a costume or how it looks on the actor I'll just start seeing it as the character.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-11 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
Same!

(Anonymous) 2023-07-11 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, they'd have to be a fair bit worse than this for it to actually break immersion for me.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-11 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
This is me, too.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-11 02:16 am (UTC)(link)
I just don’t understand why the producers didn’t spring for higher quality wigs and wig dressers. They had an enormous budget and only managed to come up with that. The teen living next to me can and has done better with a $25 wig from Amazon.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-11 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
Having witnessed Jaskier's wig in the Witcher, these are high art in comparison (especially given the inherent difficulty of making a white blonde wig look good on someone who is not naturally white blonde).

I am usually this person who complains about wigs, but screenshots are not too bad. Seconding question about them looking worse in motion

I mean I think these particular examples are fine, not great for Rhaenyra but fine. Daemon's long haired wig was ridiculous (the problem I mostly have with these long wigs in fantasy show is that they feel weighted oddly?) I think LOTR trilogy wigs for the elves were mostly good and HOTD should have used whoever made those imo. The Targs are basically elves anyway.

The Velaryon dreads however....yikes.
