Excuse you? I had hair down to the back of my knees in high school and college, and waist length well into my thirties. I didn't usually put part of it in front of my shoulders because it would get in the way, but aside from that, what's supposed to be "daft" or "stupid" about her wig? Or about the guy's hair, for that matter?

(Anonymous) 2023-07-10 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I think they mean that they’re fake looking to them, and that’s why they say they look “daft” or “stupid” looking?

(Anonymous) 2023-07-10 10:09 pm (UTC)(link)
+1

(Anonymous) 2023-07-10 10:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I guess? But that part seemed pretty normal for fantasy, to me.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-10 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I don’t disagree. Nor do wigs not being convincing looking usually take me out of the experience most of the time. I was just attempting to guess what OP meant.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-11 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
I also assumed it was about the fake look. I didn't watch the series but when images from it came up on my feeds I would laugh at the wigs.

Not as bad as the vampires' hair in the trailers for the last couple of Twilight movies (so hilarious) but I think they are pretty bad.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-11 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
Huh. Okay.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-10 10:09 pm (UTC)(link)
....wh...what part of the secret said anything about length??

(Anonymous) 2023-07-10 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Right? I don't know if ayrt is trolling or if they're genuinely so bad at reading while simultaneously being so deeply insecure that a secret about stupid looking wigs in a fantasy TV show makes them sit upright and go, "OMG, OP is clearly calling me out for having long hair!!!!!"

(Anonymous) 2023-07-10 10:28 pm (UTC)(link)
AYRT

It's not that I thought the OP meant to call out anyone real, but I looked at the picture and was thinking "oh, that looks neat, I wonder what canon it corresponds to" and then the text was like "can't take it seriously because of their wigs, so yuck!!"

When, like someone already pointed out, wigs are a perfectly sensible way to deal with a plot that calls for white-blond hair on adults. So I'm still wondering what their problem is.

I think it's maybe a little jarring because the wigs were better in Game of Thrones than in this sequel.

They just have SO MANY wigs in House of the Dragon. I don't envy the hair team! But they look okay to me or I guess I just put that aside when I watch it.

Just recently I read somewhere that light coloured wigs tend to look fake because most wig hair comes from Asia and is therefore naturally dark brown or black. Bleaching and toning it doesn't produce an entirely natural looking result, even though the hair is real human hair.

To compare, apparently Orlando Bloom's Legolas wig in LotR was made of naturally blond nordic human hair, which made it very expensive but also very realistic. I don't know if GoT used non-bleached human hair wigs or if they had some other tricks up their sleeve that HotD doesn't.

I never understand when people say a wig is bad, unless it's like party city bad. I just genuinely can't tell, even with the Cdrama wigs people complain about. It all looks real to me, or passable enough that I don't really notice. Not like we're looking for perfect realism anyway, what with the CGI dragons and all.

Oops, didn't mean to respond to this particular thread!

(Anonymous) 2023-07-12 07:25 am (UTC)(link)
A wig looks bad if it doesn't look "natural" in terms of normal human hair growth pattern (for example, excessively long sideburns) or fit with overall aesthetic of character e.g. neon pink hair of someone in gritty fantasy getup.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-10 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Haha, wow. Maybe take a deep breath, I doubt this is a personal attack on you or long haired people. HoD suffers from a similar problem as GoT - it's hard to depict Targaryens as a family known for silver/white/very pale blonde hair when you're working in live action and actors can't realistically dye their hair that light without serious damage, not to mention inconvenience. So it's gotta be wigs... and unless they're expensive and very well done, the wigs are going to be obvious and kind of hilariously bad.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-10 10:21 pm (UTC)(link)
They're going to be obviously wigs, to fans, but I don't see why that's supposed to be bad.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-10 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Because it looks dumb?

(Anonymous) 2023-07-11 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
It looks dumb to you that they're wearing a wig. On television. When they're also wearing the sort of clothes that make me hope literal dragons are a part of this setting.

Some things bother some people more than they bother other people.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-10 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
What a weird comment. I also had hair to my knees in my early adult life, and never once did I assume this secret was referring to that period in my life, much less putting it down.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-10 10:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I have long hair as well anon and I can't even begin to understand wtf you're on. Nothing about the secret mentioned length, one of the pics is even of short hair.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-10 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
AYRT

Aside from the hair color, I don't see much in common between her hair and his hair. And it's not looking to me like it's worthy of derision. At all.

(Anonymous) 2023-07-10 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Genuinely incredible response lol

(Anonymous) 2023-07-11 04:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Bzuh? What? Because it's not the length (or lack thereof for the dude) that makes them look like shitty wigs? I've always had long hair and I have zero clue how you got a mortal insult to long hair out of this secret. This is worse than "how dare you say we piss on the poor" level reading comprehension.
