Oh, god, that last series was so bad in a really baffling way. It still irks me. Jonathan was so unhappy and they didn’t seem to like each other at all.

And it wasn’t clear that the show realized that. Like, it felt like it was being presented as “oh, yeah, Jonathan’s not having fun anymore, but that’s just what happens when you grow up and get married!” Rather than acknowledging there was nothing wrong with his old job and quite a lot wrong with his new relationship.

Anyway, yes, Maddie was the best of Jonathan’s partners.

It was such a weird direction for the show to take. Designing tricks for a magician is a cool job, I assumed that was one of the quirky traits that made the character stand out. Then they come back and he's not doing that anymore, but doesn't really explain why except to hint that it was just too childish (apparently a fun job that pays your bills just fine isn't good enough?) and he's got a real job in the corporate world. Like how do you go from living in a windmill and working for a magician to a corporate job IRL. It looked joyless and suffocating and he seemed annoyed that the whole solving mysteries thing kept coming up... but why? Isn't that the point of the show? And if he didn't like it, and didn't like his "real" job, then what's the point?

Then he and his wife just didn't seem to like one another. Not love... like. They don't even get along as friends and there is no chemistry and banter because there's a weird, unexplained tension all the time, like two pissed off feral cats trapped in a small cage.

I never saw the last season, but as someone who watched and enjoyed the early ones what you've described sounds like a completely different show and I'm baffled that it went in that direction. For me the entire charm of the show was his quirky career and personality, taking that away literally makes it not the same show anymore. Yeesh, I'm glad I never saw it and I don't think I ever will.
