As a person who liked this show well enough and enjoys occasional fanart but have no interest in fandom. I had to block two tags - blackbonnet and this character name. Fandom is absolutely weird about him. I've seen countless meta, post etc. No one in fandom is normal about him. And trans fanons are always fall on favorite fandom character somehow. I am not even surprised at this point.

As a trans fan: He's terrible and pathetic and I love him for it = I want characters I love to be more like me. Obviously, not everybody will agree and that's fine. Some people would probably prefer more positive trans representation and they are welcome to pick any other OFMD character they like more to headcanon as trans. Which is great! More trans rep in any direction is a win for the fandom as a whole, IMO.

They've seen people tag to specify that in their story, Israel Hands was born male, and identifies as a guy. Because the OFMD fandom apparently has so many stories where he's Female-to-Male (FtM) trans.

That doesn't follow.

If canon's got a man portraying a man, and in a fic that character had to go against what everyone else thought they were to identify as a man, the author has significantly changed them: both their body and their history.

"No stated sexual orientation" is a canon absence, a silence, not fanon blatantly contradicting canon.

I'd argue that the ship tag, that tells you that in this story these two guys are hooking up ARE telling you that this character is likely not straight.

From what I've gathered from fandom osmosis, Izzy is the only guy trying to take being a pirate seriously on a show that operates on screwball comedy logic. I get that he might stick out like a sore thumb and look like an extra meany because everyone else is in a soft-edged world where no one actually hangs for piracy, or loots and murders like they mean it, but I'm not sure what your problem with him is. Aside from people deciding he ought to be written as trans.

Lmao I've actually been loving all the trans!Izzy stuff because, quite frankly, most of the trans!character stuff in my other fandoms is, like, take the least feminine/masculine character and make them trans. Meanwhile, the trans!Izzy stuff is,,,, almost the complete opposite, I love it. It's all very "Transvestites Can Be Cannibals Too" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sk_aUZUqXnU) and it's completely my jam. Trans headcanons can be toxic favs too!

Lots of Izzy fans are transmasc. They relate to the character, and want to interpret the character through the lens of their own experience with gender. That's all.
