Eh?

In my experience, fandom opts for a threesome between the canon pair and the fanon love interest.

(Anonymous) 2023-08-06 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
That depends heavily on the fandom. Besides not everyone wants to insert the canon het into their slash pairing.

(Anonymous) 2023-08-06 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
And which fandom would this be? (since it's not Skullgirls)

I'm sure there are a few folks who are emotionally 12 when it comes to fandom. Just tune them out, they're idiots.

(Anonymous) 2023-08-06 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Seems like it might just be the circle or fandom you're in. I've not personally experienced this at all.

(Anonymous) 2023-08-06 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I’m glad I haven’t run across that in any of my fandoms. I have seen some troubling purity culture BS and the accompanying pearl clutching but nothing so regressive as this.

(Anonymous) 2023-08-06 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Definitely specific for whatever fandom you're in. Most of the time fans are more likely to complain about the canon het pair. In the ones I'm in, people are more chill and may even like the canon pair, but nothing about defending it at all costs, still secondary to the popular fanon ship.

(Anonymous) 2023-08-07 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
You sound like a disgruntled shipper, annoyed that your faves aren't The Most Popular Thing Ever. Maybe... just let people enjoy things?

(Anonymous) 2023-08-07 02:39 am (UTC)(link)
OP here. I don't care what other people ship. I just want to be able to ship my ships in peace, without being pestered about the canon het.

(Anonymous) 2023-08-07 03:00 am (UTC)(link)
That sounds like a general fandom issue of learning how to tune things out.

There are always going to be people in fandom who like different things from you, whatever it is you like, and 'tuning out' is a useful life skill. Good luck!

As the anon above me said, this sounds like an issue of tuning/blocking things. Difficult to curate depending on where your fandom is centered (Reddit? Dreamwidth? Tumblr? The platform formerly known as Twitter? Pillowfort?), but if at all possible, find yourself a corner that doesn't push the canon het at you. Start a Dreamwidth comm or a Tumblr blog for it. Block any and all canon het ship tags and block anyone who acts like an ass about shipping.

I know it sucks when your ship isn't the fandom juggernaut, and the het-vs-slash arguments have been going back and forth for decades, so all I can suggest is curate, curate, curate.

(Anonymous) 2023-08-07 03:57 am (UTC)(link)
I have no idea what you're talking about. Most fandoms I've been in have been a mix of unapologetically shitting on the canon het ship and ignoring it entirely, with only a small subsection of fandom liking it.

(Anonymous) 2023-08-07 06:14 am (UTC)(link)
this

(Anonymous) 2023-08-07 02:29 pm (UTC)(link)
That depends heavily on the fandom. Your experience has been very different from mine, and you have obviously never encountered that contingent of loud, smugly entitled canon het shippers who accuse anyone who doesn't ship the canon het of "disrespecting canon," "disrespecting the creators," calling slash shippers misogynist/accusing them of erasure for ignoring the canon het ship or the het love interest, and/or calling the slash shippers dirty, disgusting fujos.

Also, once you get outside AO3 and tumblr, het is way more popular than slash or femslash (although femslash is more tolerated because it appeals to straight men).

+1

(Anonymous) 2023-08-07 09:08 pm (UTC)(link)
AYRT - You're right! I have not experienced more than a minor amount of any of that in my twenty-plus years in a dozen or so fandoms. Which is rather the point.

If OP didn't want a bunch of us going, "Um, what?" in response to their secret, they should've specified what fandom(s) they were talking about, or at least specified that they were talking about select fandoms, rather that phrasing their secret to be about fandom at large.

Really? You've been very lucky, then. In my fandoms, it's been the canon het shippers attacking competing noncanon ships, especially slash.

(Anonymous) 2023-08-07 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
DA but I'd say you've been very unlucky tbh.

(Anonymous) 2023-08-07 04:39 am (UTC)(link)
We seem to get more and more secrets referencing some kind of fandom phenomenon that's apparently taking over and I've never seen or heard about before or outside of that specific secret.

Where do people hang out that a canon het pairing is "protected"???

(Anonymous) 2023-08-07 06:13 am (UTC)(link)
It would help if OP had tagged a fandom, yes.

Yeah, I'm wondering this too because I certainly haven't seen this in any of my fandoms that have canon het ships.

(Anonymous) 2023-08-07 01:41 pm (UTC)(link)
As someone in the FMA fandom I definitely understand this pain.

(Anonymous) 2023-08-08 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
Genshin Impact and Arcane are other fandoms where this happens. I only talk about Genshin with my friends now.
