Nah.

Found the guy who wants to monetize fanfic, I guess.

(Anonymous) 2023-08-17 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
You guess wrong.

Lol. But paypal isn't. People were paying for fandom shit long before paypal. Also, social media was the worst thing to happen to fandom (and the internet).

(Anonymous) 2023-08-17 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
This is the correct answer.

Social media needs to be taken out back and shot.

(Anonymous) 2023-08-19 02:30 am (UTC)(link)
If I knew how, it would already be done, anon.

They do seem to be doing a pretty good job of shooting themselves, though, judging from Reddit and Twitter's latest attempts at making their sites unusable.

Right? This secret is confusing for me because there's always been fandom stuff for sale. Anybody remember zines??? They weren't free, you had to buy them. Idgi.

(Anonymous) 2023-08-18 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
In general, though, if you contributed a story or art to a zine, you would get a free copy of that zine. People who didn't contribute to them had to buy them, because it cost money to produce them. However, it was considered bad form to make a profit from them.

(Anonymous) 2023-08-18 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that's the primary difference here. When you bought a zine, you got an actual physical item that cost money to produce, and the people who made the zine either weren't making money off it OR they were giving the proceeds to charity. Zines were never meant to be a vehicle for profit, they were something that was made for love of the fandom.

Zines still exist, bit confused about the past tense but I generally agree!

(Anonymous) 2023-08-18 03:52 am (UTC)(link)
I think zines have had a big uptick in the last few years, in fact!

Previous to PayPal pay-for-fandom activities were a very minor part of fandom. A stall at a con, a few people doing little stuff, low volume, for checks, but there was just no way to mass market that shit or pay en masse. PayPal changed all that, for the worse.

(Anonymous) 2023-08-17 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Without social media, it would still be a minor part of fandom.

+10 lol
