Jump scares and gore: It's not horror, it's just gimmicks and torture porn.

I mean, I don't find gore scary myself, but it's not an invalid form of horror. Mutilation of the flesh can be horrifying. Eli Roth is a gore king because he's scared of it, for example.

You can spend a lot of time and effort constructing a truly intelligent and deviously written movie, or just chuck a cat at the camera with a scare chord in the background and call it a day. Which cheap and easy option do you think most directors and studios are going to go with? Writing a truly scary story is fucking hard.

I personally find jump scares very scary and unpleasant

(Anonymous) 2023-08-26 10:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I mean, I find them unpleasant, but having my startle reflex triggered is a very different thing from actual fear.

(Anonymous) 2023-08-26 10:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, jump scares get me even when I know they're coming (they're quite obvious a lot of the time) or when I've seen the movie before. But I also get jump scared by colleagues coming up to my desk at work, lol.

I was hanging out with some friend a couple months ago watching terrible horror movies, and I didn't get scared by anything in the actual movies, but I did jump about 5 feet in the air when their dog barked unexpectedly.

I have literally jump-scared my wife more than once by just standing in the hall.

(Anonymous) 2023-08-27 06:24 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, same. I'm never more scared during a horror movie than the instant of a jump scare, but it's just way too much, too intense--like being electrocuted with fright.

That's not to say I think jump scares are excellent story-telling. They can be good if handled deftly, but are more often used like a cheat code to make the movie scarier. I'm generally with OP on wishing for fewer jump scares; I just can't relate to the idea that they're not scary. Just because they're a cheap scare doesn't mean they're not scary.

I like a few jump scares along with psychological horror, they're boring when they're overused but a little goes a long way. A well-timed jump scare can be really fun.

I think jump scared can be used well, but much like gore they so rarely are and horror movie creators rely on them rather than use them sparingly for effect. But overall yeah I’d rather little to no jump scares and play on my mind more.

I hate jump scares and scare chords. Nothing worse than a violin screech right in your ear.

(Anonymous) 2023-08-27 06:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I hate pretty much anytime I feel like the score is trying to hammer me over the head with exactly how to feel.

As I've grown, I've tried more and more to get more accustomed to horror stuff I don't like, including jump scares.

I like jump scares if they're effective in the story and aren't overused. To my memory my favorite use of the jump scare was the first Conjuring movie.

The jump scares throughout the film were well executed, weren't overdone and helped set up the atmosphere to the movie really well.

The best part though was the ending shot!!! My best friend and I were covering our eyes at the end and nothing happened! Like, fuck you James Wan, effective ass story teller!!

So I only jump scares if they aren't overdone and IMO serve a purpose outside of the movie makers wanting audiences to jump. Like, yeah but WHY did you want us to be alarmed in this scene?? You want us to pay closer attention to the screen? OK, then you better make sure that what follows is worth that jump scare.

SA

AH-HA!! I see it now, the filmmakers have to earn that fear of the jump scare and so few do. That ending of "The Conjuring" was well earned IMO.

I think not many horror films with jump scares execute this well, sadly.

This is why I prefer Asian horror movies. Not that they're without jump scares, but many of them are more subtle and not so in your face as Western ones.

(Anonymous) 2023-08-27 01:36 pm (UTC)(link)
For me, it's a toss-up. Sometimes the lack of jump scares and focus on atmosphere is enough to balance out the supernatural randomness and excessive (even compared to Western movies) use of "mentally ill = evil" stereotypes. Sometimes it's not.

(Anonymous) 2023-08-27 05:47 am (UTC)(link)
I like jump scares when they are used more for comedy reasons like in Nope

Meh

(Anonymous) 2023-08-27 06:29 pm (UTC)(link)
No, they're not the height of horror. And directors shouldn't rely on them. But it's kind of like expecting action movies not to have car chases. It's just part of the genre.
