Throwing that good will IN THE TRASH

(Anonymous) 2023-09-16 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
Seems like a lot of celebrities are throwing all the good will they built up away lately.

Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis with their letters. Drew Barrymore for crossing the picket line. Makes me glad I don't idolize any actors.

People are people, they all eventually fuck up some time or another.

Not Mr. Rogers though.

Eh, someone out there will find Mr. Rogers falling short of their standards because he wasn't perfect or had to navigate a certain era to the best of his ability (as opposed to being 100% woke by today's "wokest" standards). ayrt's point is to keep in mind that we're all human.

DA

But this. A celebrity did something you think is a big mistake = they're humans. Even the ones that are brilliant musicians or actors rarely have transcendent insight about how to live well.

This remind me of something a friend of mine says regularly: that we need to be careful to not let perfection get in the way of good.

yeah this is a good reason not to stan but also, the response to this...like i do not think crossing the picket line or defending your rapist friend are in fact the immutable eventualities of every celebrity lmao

I don't understand why people didn't expect Danny Masterson's close friends and relatives to write letters to the judge. People that are not famous, that are accused of much worse crimes have people write letters requesting leniency. This goes on almost every day in society.

I mean, not every convicted sex offender's friend writes a letter explaining that while they might be a rapist, they're totally a cool dude in other ways. They can choose not to. I think people expected Kutchner and Kunis to choose NOT to vouch for and make apologies for a rapist.

Maybe they don't believe he is a rapist.

I have written these letters and you have to say in the letter that you understand that the person has been found guilty of this specific crime (or is accused of the crime in the case of good character letters for ongoing cases) so there is no way that they didn't know or understand what they were signing up for. They signed up to support a convicted rapist in full awareness. I would not write a letter in support of a rapist no matter how close a friend they were.

Just because a judge convicted him, it doesn't mean that he's a rapist or that everyone must believe the judge made the right decision.

If you hate women that much IDK what to tell you.
Have fun licking the boots of sexual abusers ???

"I don't think there's enough evidence to conclude this man is a rapist."

"WHY DO YOU HATE WOMEN?!"

Yeah, your hyperbole isn't helping.

I've voiced the opinion that Masterson is an asshole, but honestly? It's not easy to turn your back on a 20-year friendship. Well, maybe some people find it easy, but if you shared so much over the years with someone, you will struggle with that.

For all we know, they knew what he was, and maybe founding Thorn was a subconscious way of repenting for that (my baseless hypothesis). It's also possible he hid that side of him very well and they genuinely believed in him. If you know anything about abusers, it's that if they abused everyone, the jig would be up immediately and they'd suffer consequences so much sooner. It's not great that someone wrote letters of support for a rapist, but I'm not shocked that a rapist's friend would do that.

The gross part to me is that Aston Kutcher runs a program that alledgedly helps rescue people/children being sex trafficked.
1) If you claim to be an advocate for the sexually exploited/abused and you are placing importance and support on the convicted rapist, it seems to me like you don't really support or believe real actual living breathing speaking victims and survivors of sexual abuse
2) Turns out Ashton's nonprofit get their stats of "saving children from sex trafficking" by labeling consenting adult sex workers as said children, even when said sex workers don't want to be "saved" by said program ("anti-sex trafficking" industry is gross puritan BS too, but it's getting a bit off topic)
3) the nonprofit is funded by plenty of well known abusers/rapists/sexual abusers, like Sean Penn

I cannot stress enough, when you claim with all the breath in your chest that you believe victims, or that you support them, or that you care...and then you go around and support someone not only accused and criminally prosecuted for rape by multiple people, I know that you're a fucking liar and you only act like you give a fuck when it benefits you in some shallow public way.
Like, seeing the way so many of these high profile cases involving sexual assault/sexual violence are treated, I'm so fucking sick and tired of people acting like assholes wondering why victims don't come forward.
Because people focus on the accused/abuser and still find a way to blame it on the victim.

So he's still helped more people than you ever will.

If you mean placed in controlling institutions that robbed the people they "saved" of their anatomy and choices, yeah.

Cannot understand why those of you love the taste of abusers' boots but have at it. I don't fucking need anyone's support or approval to feel sure in my stand that Ashton Kutcher is a fucking greedy self serving asshole.

Source? All I can find is that the organization rescued fewer trafficked victims than it identified, not that the people identified were regular sex workers.

Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis were asked to provide character statements by the family, based on their own experience with that man. Their mistake here was agreeing to do so and being honest. Most predators act normally around others.

That doesn't exactly throw all their years of charity work away.

yeah their charity work was questionable before all this!
