I'm cheating a bit, but some of the english names for Sailor Moon are so odd. Like Sailor Mars as Raye? (I do not think Rei feels like the same as Raye at all). Sailor Jupiter as Lita??? Darien!!?!?!?! Meanwhile Mina is the perfect english name for Sailor Venus.

Yeah still don't get how Usagi and Chibiusa became Serena and Rini. It took me maybe 20 years to realize "OHHH.. Rini is supposed to be a diminutive of Serena".

Serena is one of the many names for a moon goddess, so it technically fits, but at the same time cmon Bunny is right there and fits her personality better.

That part makes sense to me, since Serena is just a shorter Serenity. But honestly...I don't like it. They might as well have called her Bunny.

They did call her Bunny in the German dub! Which meant nothing to kindergarden-me, since I couldn't speak English. In hindsight it's weird that they went with the English translation in the German dub, especially since they went with the Japanese names for all other characters as far as I remember. Even Chibiusa was called Chibiusa!

aw, maybe they just thought bunny was too cute to pass up lol

In the French dub too.

In Italian, too!
Usagi was Bunny and Chibiusa was Chibiusa, but pronounced like KIbiusa.
It took me 10+ years and finally reading the manga in Japanese to understand why chibiusa was called THAT. I understood the meaning of chibi, but didn't link it to "ki"biusa.

Uh, maybe the European versions all took the same translation direction? It happened a lot with 90s' anime.

I think she was called Bunny in the translated manga, at least until they changed it to Serena. Personally, I really like Serena and I’m not such a big fan of Usagi, even though I know that it’s more meaningful and it’s her actual name.

I like most of the dub names in Sailor Moon, but I always thought Amara was a weird choice for Haruka.

I like the name, but I also just have no idea how it fits with Haruka or Uranus

I think it's because A-ma-ra has 3 syllables, so it may have been easier to dub.

ooh, yeah, the practical reason makes sense

to be fair, a lot of English translation names in old anime are weird. Musashi and Kojiro are Jessie and James but they’re somehow more connected to those names than the samurai they’re probably named after.

da but yeah, they were named after Miyamoto Musashi and Sasaki Kojiro.

that's insanely cool lol. i guess it might sense if jessie and james were named after jesse james, but honestly downgrade.
