What names do you genuinely think didn't fit a character? What characters do you think would have been diminished being named anything else?

I'm cheating a bit, but some of the english names for Sailor Moon are so odd. Like Sailor Mars as Raye? (I do not think Rei feels like the same as Raye at all). Sailor Jupiter as Lita??? Darien!!?!?!?! Meanwhile Mina is the perfect english name for Sailor Venus.

Yeah still don't get how Usagi and Chibiusa became Serena and Rini. It took me maybe 20 years to realize "OHHH.. Rini is supposed to be a diminutive of Serena".

Serena is one of the many names for a moon goddess, so it technically fits, but at the same time cmon Bunny is right there and fits her personality better.

That part makes sense to me, since Serena is just a shorter Serenity. But honestly...I don't like it. They might as well have called her Bunny.

I think she was called Bunny in the translated manga, at least until they changed it to Serena. Personally, I really like Serena and I’m not such a big fan of Usagi, even though I know that it’s more meaningful and it’s her actual name.

I like most of the dub names in Sailor Moon, but I always thought Amara was a weird choice for Haruka.

I like the name, but I also just have no idea how it fits with Haruka or Uranus

to be fair, a lot of English translation names in old anime are weird. Musashi and Kojiro are Jessie and James but they’re somehow more connected to those names than the samurai they’re probably named after.

they were named after samurai?

Genshin new character named Writhsley or something like that. Too ridiculous.

Wriothesley! Which is a bit worse. I love the pronunciation discussions, though. Riot-slay? Hot-slay??? love how we all settled for Whore Slayer too

Im still in the beginning of the game with pretty normal (mondstadt) names still. The Liyue names so far are nice as well.
Looking forward to the fancy ass ones when i progress to fontaine (in 5 years at this rate)

I'm never getting over Cloud being Cloud. I understand it's meant to be a corruption of "Claude" but still feel like that soft-ass name made the English-speaking fandom treat him 90% less seriously. Then again, Square has seldom been good at naming characters.

Re: Inspired by #4:

(Anonymous) 2023-09-23 09:39 pm (UTC)(link)
his mothers name is supposedly Claudia in later material so calling him Claude instead of Cloud would’ve been akin to naming him after her

ngl I prefer Cloud to Squall, if only because clouds don't also have the association of babies crying.

I do like the silly names though. And, amusingly, they seem to like names that start with 'C' for the main dudes without the silly names. We've got Cecil and Clive.

I was never thrilled with Barry for The Flash, but, honestly, Wally isn't much better.

Bear with me on this dichotomy - Teen Wolf the show is so divorced from the movie that I think they should have called it something else and not used any of the character names from the movie at all, however, Stiles is just so freaking Stiles that he would not be nearly the character he is if he had a different name, even an equally quirky one.

yeah, these are names than are so rooted in time, that it makes sense when I think of the flash and kid flash as a 1950s thing but they sound incredibly old-fashioned, like an anon mentioned below. Jay sounds much more translatable to modern times.

A lot of older media is kind of funny in that way because of the way name connotations have changed since the time they were made. In the last book in the Anne of Green Gables series, Rilla of Ingleside, the title character says she wishes her family had chosen to call her by her first name, Bertha, instead of her middle name, Marilla, because Bertha was beautiful and romantic while Marilla was old-fashioned and frumpy. Today those connotations are totally reversed. I'm not sure I would have been able to take the book as seriously if she had been called Bertha.

This was so funny to me that I looked it up and Bertha was at its height of popularity from 1883-1887 with it's the most babies named that in 1918 so Marilla was right lmao. I wonder how it got so popular.

I've ranted about names not fitting in Hetalia before and I'll add Francès from The Prince and the Dressmaker. Is Parisian, looks of North African descent, or might be mixed-race Moor and that's a fucking English name and *Nobody* was called that in Paris nor in then-French colonies a century ago, nobody is called that *nowadays* It would already be odd for her to be called Françoise but still plausible. Francès? now that's just plain stupid. That screams "I'm doing no research at all for My Artistique Booque because Europe isn't real anyway".

Re: Inspired by #4:

(Anonymous) 2023-09-24 02:44 pm (UTC)(link)
OH YEAH, I agree. I'm not french, but I know a little bit about names and when I read Francès I was ???? YO WHAT
I really enjoyed the comic, but that NAME... UGH. I even forgot she was called that. It's just... not right.
I just think that IDK the comic is in another reality or something, which is quite fitting since it's very heart-warming and reality probably wouldn't play out like that.
