As a longtime fan of the manga, fair. I love all the Strawhats but Sanji always ranks in the bottom for me just because of the pervert gags. It's a testament to how great his character is otherwise that I still love him at all because hot damn I find the pervert jokes infuriating, especially since he had a big chance to grow out of it during one part of the story and instead Oda doubled down on it.

Sanji in the live action is everything I could have hoped for. He's amazing and since Sanji is the showrunners favourite character I'm confident that he'll keep being amazing and adorable in the live action. Definitely my favourite version of Sanji.

And since it is made for a 2023 US audience, the perv stuff will probably never be a thing. This isn't 80s Hollywood anymore thankfully.

Yes! He is a wonderful character, but I hate this pervert shounen trope so much. I wasn't fond of it 15 years ago and I am not fond of it now.
LA Sanji just being all flirty is such a delight and is actually a nice narrative foil to extreme aroace Luffy.

You are correct and I'm deeply frustrated by how much OG fans excuse. Oda has a serious problem with women and with sexual offenders in real life, and he's been a corrupting influence in the industry.

The only thing I know of is his interview with Watsuki for the Rurouni Kenshin event. But considering that Shueisha gave Watsuki his job back immediately and has no problem celebrating him still (see: the Rurouni Kenshin event) I'd say the industry is already plenty corrupt.

Oda's involved in the live action version too. If you have a real problem with him, you shouldn't be enjoying that either even if it fixes what you don't like about the manga. Otherwise, you're still supporting him.

Because as always, the real fault with characters like Sanji is with the writer, not the character. They're the way they are because the writer doesn't think there's anything wrong with them. I can properly hate a gross pervert character who was written on purpose to be a gross pervert. If they were written to be a funny lovable pervert but are actually gross, my issue is the writer and the character is just a failed character.

Honestly the biggest reason I never got into the manga/anime despite a lot of talk about how decent it is, is that I hate the art-style. I agree that the way women are drawn are the worst offenders but I think they all look awful and could never get past it for the story. It's just hideous.

But I like the show and part of that is definitely because they just look like people and not weird, warped monstrosities.

I don't think anyone is wrong for not liking that trope, and not wanting even an ounce of it in their orbit. fair. clearly, no amount of seeing Sanji as a fully fleshed-out character with nuance and trauma and legit times where he supercedes his bullshit is going to convice anyone who is already certain that he's just a pervert-trope and nothing else. But by god are all yall missing a shitload of context because hurr hurr boobs. Whatever. I don't think anyone's saying he's "just" the pervert-trope, but rather that the annoying and outdated pervert trope is hard to put up with, and makes people less likely to get to the parts you're talking about, where Sanji's character shines. As someone with several faves who fell into that category, I feel that.

However, I'm not gonna complain when an adaptation removes that shitty part and keeps the rest, allowing more people to see the parts I love.

Oh, please. Sanji is a very beloved character in the fandom and the majority of people who hate the pervert trope very much love Sanji despite him being a pervert. Even the people who really dislike Sanji after the timeskip typically fall back in love with him during While Cake.

I agree with your approach, if a character I love has a tropey gag that I hate shoved onto them because anime gonna anime, then I just pretend that part of their personality doesn't exist or at least isn't diegetic (eg "omg she has pictures of him covering every inch of her room, that's creepy stalker behavior and he should get a restraining order" = me going "lol nah the pictures are only there in her imagination and it's just a metaphor for how much she likes him") because they're not real people hurting anyone real. But also not everyone can turn off parts of characterization like that, and if it becomes to frequent with the character, even I can't do it anymore.

The live action has finally motivated me to read the manga after stopping at the Arlong Park arc over a decade and a half ago (ha! right where the LA ended), but man, yeah, I do not miss the outdated and sexiest part of it.

I appreciate the LA for removing some of that nonsense (like I noticed Lady Aldiva was not treated as "ugly" because she was fat in the LA, for example, so good on them), including Sanji's creepy perverted behavior.

I have never read the manga because that guy with the long nose is genuinely disgusting. Like, I cannot stand to look at him and was relieved he was covered up in this secret. I rarely have this kind of visceral reaction to any kind of comics art (and usually it's when it's meant to be disgusting) so I have no idea why this guy repulses me so much but he does.

Perverts in anime/manga were very common back in the 80s/90s era. Happosai from Ranma 1/2, Master Yoshi from DBZ, etc. It’s only been in the last couple of decades that they’ve basically been cleared out of the genre.

These are pretty much the reasons I dropped One Piece years ago. After the timeskip, the problems I had with Sanji and the depiction of the female characters got so bad I couldn't derive much enjoyment from the rest of it.

The habdling of the women might have gotten better on the narrative level if not the way they are drawn, but I can’t imagine wading through the rest of Dressrosa to find out.
