Vent thread

For anyone who needs to vent.

Yes, the system in the US where companies can under-pay wait staff and then customers are expected to tip 20% or more to supplement their wages is problematic. Just not tipping is not the solution. Wait staff are not the problem. Don't be an asshole.

Got into an argument with a bunch of people on Facebook with a bunch of people who don't "believe" in tipping and are totally comfortable with saying they don't tip ever.

Yeah, tipping culture is disgusting, but the way to indicate that is to fight for minimum wage, not punish individual employees stuck in the system.

It's funny how once again it's poor people getting screwed over. As someone who uses my tips to pay for my groceries each week, yeah, people are definitely tipping far less this year than ever before. My friends who also live on tips have all said the same too.

Yep, typical. People want to go out to eat, but they also aren't rich so they think that cutting down or cutting back on the tip is a great way to save a few bucks. I don't have any patience for people like that. Tipping is part of the cost of eating out in a restaurant, if you can't afford it, stay the fuck home and make yourself a meal.

Meh. By that logic, nobody made servers pick that job, if they don't like it they can quit.

DA

A lot of them already have, at least those that have a variety of options. In some areas, server jobs tend to be the most available.

I try to tip fairly when I go to sit down restaurants, but man, it drives me nuts that basically every machine everywhere now asks for tips. I went to a concert, bought a shirt, and the lady at the merch stand flipped the monitor so I could select a tip. I was so confused.

AYRT

Oh I agree. I think that is different, though wages in the US in general have not kept up. But it is specifically with servers that I think it is wrong not to tip.

Meanwhile, in my country, gig economy companies like Uber are trying to bring tipping here :( Because like... you KNOW your UberEats driver is not getting paid enough, so when that option to tip comes up you think wow yeah I DO wish they got more money, and next thing you know we'll have legislated away minimum wage and we're just America 2.0. Ugh.

Re: Vent thread

To be fair, employers in US states that still have a separate tipped minimum wage are supposed to pay their employees enough to equal the actual, non-tipped, federal minimum wage if their tips don't reach that amount.

But to be unfair truthful, lots of employers illegally rip their employees off and don't actually pay that difference, and also, even our regular federal minimum wage is maybe 1/3 of a living wage in the cheapest, most dirt-poor areas of the poorest states in the country.

So glad my state doesn't have a separate tipped minimum wage and our state minimum wage is more than 2x the federal. Still not a living wage most anywhere here, but it could be so much worse.

I think tipping is great if it's in addition to a living wage for workers, as a way to show appreciation, but its roots as a way to underpay workers (mostly of color, but also just poor service workers in general) are nasty.

And fuck Uber et al for fucking over workers by misclassifying employees as contractors and fighting against fair treatment and compensation wherever they go. I hope your country keeps their gig economy bs from taking over.

Ugh, I know people like that. It's so stupid to act like you're some warrior for minimum wage reform by shafting members of waitstaff, but people are stupid AND cheap, and they've found a cause that in their mind, celebrates both those qualities.

Re: Vent thread

I had no idea about this law before I worked as a server. I thought food service were required to be paid the minimum wage like everyone else. I still tipped, but a lot of people who don't might seriously not know either.

As someone from a country with a "you tip 10% if you're satisfied with the service but you don't have to" policy, everything I see about US tipping culture is grotesque and the way just about every business has these "add a tip" option now is fucking weird. However, if I were to go out to eat in the US I would follow the tipping guidelines because it's part of the whole thing.
What I do not understand is why people just put up with this shit though. Isn't there an option for strike or something like that? All I see is people going "well that's just how it is" all the time without anyone ever trying to change this obviously flawed system.

Re: Vent thread

(Anonymous) 2023-10-05 11:26 am (UTC)(link)
People do try it change it. People definitely try to get rid of the tipped minimum wage but there's a lot of opposition from restauranteers and so on. Part of the problem is that so much stuff in the US is done at the local or state level so all the changes happen incredibly piecemeal.

I want to travel, I want to go places and do things. But airplane and bus seats are so tiny and cramped and uncomfortable. I fucking hate it! I guess I'll just be traveling within driving distance.

My older coworkers refuse to accept virtually signed invoices. So once a week I have to go on just to sign shit since virtual signatures are too scary.

I would like just ONE week this year where I don't want to tear out my own eyeballs because of one medical emergency or another or one pileup of political shit or another, but rn that feels like way too much to ask

I am annoyed that this is being reported by some news outlets as a sure thing. The sample size is too low, and this press release is honestly kinda sketchy.
