I dunno. I can't imagine someone who doesn't want to read about racism being totally okay with all the, well, basically constant rape in that series.

Re: Beards

(Anonymous) 2023-11-13 12:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Ehhh I find a lot of men are using them like make-up now, basically. There are styles you can coax your beard into to try to make it look you have a stronger jaw, or to hide a weak chin, or cover roundness/neck fat. The really handsome ones still shave (or at least, do the stubble/very short beard thing). It has become a hat but for your face instead of a receding hairline; you know exactly why that overweight guy has his beard trimmed to try to sharpen his jawline in the same way you know why that 40+ year old guy always wears a ballcap indoors.

I'm asexual so it's not about attraction for me but aesthetically, I also think there are a lot of men who just don't know which type of beard is flattering for them. Also: I absolutely loathe mustaches no matter the guy.

I didn't realize how short Robert Reich was. (I didn't pay much attention during the Clinton era.)

The Expanse

(Anonymous) 2023-11-13 02:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Not really. You can believe that, but I'm more rolling my eyes at how, once again, the Default (white) Experience is seen as just fine, but anything else is "messagey" and "preachy."

Try 'The Expanse', OP.

(Anonymous) 2023-11-13 02:42 pm (UTC)(link)
It's like. THE most common story told. Evil, corrupt corporations and seedy nobles are like. One of if not THE most common trope.

They're also the default fantasy/sci-fi experience to the point no one seems to BLINK about it, even people who want "no real world issues" in their stories.

(Anonymous) 2023-11-13 02:49 pm (UTC)(link)
This is extra hilarious to me because the character is Marinette Dupain-Cheng from Miraculous Ladybug so the puns would be even worse.
BlueNETTE MariNETTE... Awful. I love it.

(Anonymous) 2023-11-13 02:54 pm (UTC)(link)
AH, me too with FATWS! /high five
That show single handedly killed all my interest in the MCU. That's depressing, honestly. Sam and Bucky had so much potential...

I feel kind of the same, but luckily I can still enjoy the classic seasons (the third doctor is my fave and I rewatch the old episodes with delgado!master at least once every two years) and even the first season of new doctor with Eccleston.
I'm sorry, OP.

(Anonymous) 2023-11-13 04:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Bluette is as dumb as ravenette or any neologism for hair color.

(Anonymous) 2023-11-13 04:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't even rewatch old episodes. I hope the new season is better but I'm not holding my breath.

(Anonymous) 2023-11-13 04:49 pm (UTC)(link)
And I'm rolling my eyes that the default POC story can only have racism related drama to be interesting in so many novels.

i mean...this is what reviews are for. like this is an easily solvable problem, so if you're not doing the easily solvable solution, but I'm going to assume it's deeper than your dislike of after school special books, which i agree are annoying as hell.

(Anonymous) 2023-11-13 05:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Not OP, but I've looked at those books before and been put off in case I end up committed to a series that goes off the rails - I guess this is my cue to take the leap :)

No going off the rails - it's a truly excellent sci-fi epic! I've read the whole series several times.

The series was good, as well, although of course had to end rather more quickly than the books, as there is just a LOT.... I'd give both a try. :D

Nah, it's not super weird. But there is a chance that author doesn't want to see this ship and that's ok. So tag properly, or go to Ao3 or discord or whatever to discuss this ship.

-Kill La Kill
-Revolutionary Girl Utena (gender and sexuality are central themes, but there is A LOT more going on)
-Sarazanmai

(Anonymous) 2023-11-13 09:40 pm (UTC)(link)
THIS.

(Anonymous) 2023-11-13 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Not everyone has those experiences, though.

Like, as a queer person, I can't relate at all to stories about queer angst because when I came out to my parents, my mom's response was "Okay, if you get a girlfriend instead of a boyfriend we're still expecting you to bring her home for Thanskgiving." Some of us would like to read stories like that, where being queer/fat/disabled/POC isn't a source of angst.

Not OP, but good luck finding decent book reviews of genre fiction. On the professional end, you're lucky if you get anything beyond a sentence or two of fluffing from another author. And reader reviews are either going to be fangirl squeeing or 1 star reviews complaining about politics and/or shipping.

(Anonymous) 2023-11-14 02:58 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, this. I was trying to find some decent reviews for a book I was interested in checking out recently and finally just gave up because I couldn't find anything that had any actual substance to it in terms of discussing what the book was actually about.
