Everyone in OP except Sanji has dead loved ones in their background, and Sanji only gets a pass because his living family are nazis so same diff. EVERYONE. Dads, moms, adopted guardians, brothers, sisters, grandparents, children...it's almost disingenuous to claim only mothers/wives are fridged for manpain, because lbr everyone has someone they loved fridged for gender-equivalent-pain. I don't hate Kuma but I don't really care about him, and I actively don't give a single shit about Bonney (except that SHE'S TWELVE??!! NOT IN HER 20's??!!) so I just can't bring myself to care that poor Kuma went through an equivalent amount of backstory trauma as almost everyone and lbr Robin's backstory is worse. Nami's backstory is worse. Rebecca's backstory is worse! Why no crying about Shirahoshi's dead mom? What about Law's literally everyone dying, no it only counts if it was just his mom? Okay then.

Though I gotta say, I don't think I'd call Nami's backstory worse than Kuma's. Nami's backstory is essentially the lite version of what slaves of the world nobles experience. At least Nami was never hunted and killed for sports and entertainment. Dito Rebecca's backstory.

(Anonymous) 2023-12-02 03:32 am (UTC)(link)either way, I struggle to find anyone of importance to the story who doesn't have at least one dead family member/loved one in their backstory so it still just doesn't resonate with me as anything atypical or specifically gendered to mothers vs fathers or whatever.

Sure, Kuma was a bit more violent when fighting with the RA for a bit but the moment Bonney became sick Kuma immediately left the RA to take care of his daughter. Everything he's doing he's done for Bonney.

I can't say anything about whether it's very fridgey since I haven't read the latest chaps, but I will say I feel like Oda kills off a lot of characters of different genders to motivate characters, so I too probably wouldn't have noticed if I hadn't seen this secret. Everyone in OP has tragic backstories and dead family, it would be tougher to find characters who don't!
