spoilers, if you don't already know:
specifically one character is commentary on england's foreign presence: one of them is a soldier who stole food from West Africans and left them to die. When he tells the others about what he did, he repeats the "africans don't feel like europeans" trope.
eta: also...there's the original title. there's a deliberate irony imo that these classic paragons of british behavior are called a slur for black people as they die. she probably still shouldn't have called it that, but i think it does make it pretty clear the book is commentary on british society
