the whole thing is a commentary on justice in general, so each of the characters is a trope of an English profession or personality that has been given trust that they don't deserve. There's an implication that it is the value English society places on them that allows them to get away with murder.

I read the book as a teenager, and this aspect of it went completely over my head. I still enjoyed it at the time, but now I'm thinking I should really reread it with this in mind.
