Libraries

(Anonymous) 2024-01-03 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
Do you go to the library regularly? Or do you even have a library card?

I go all the time and I just kind of assumed that was normal. But then I was just talking to someone and they said they haven't been since they were a kid and honestly never even thought about it. And then I was watching a friends kid and we went to the library for storytime and when I dropped the kid off and told the parents what we did they said that was the kids first library visit, which honestly kind of shocked me. So now I'm curious!

I go like once a month to take my niece. But I use Libby these days for most of my reading purposes.

The local library was within walking distance as a kid and I was a regular visitor. I stopped going when I went to college, since I didn't have time for anything that wasn't in the school library. I did get a new library card when I moved, though I didn't use it regularly as I was working too much and eventually it expired from non-use. I got a new card as I was being diagnosed for SVT and discovered the Libby app, and now I regularly download audiobooks to listen to. If you count that as going to the library, then yes I go regularly.

I think it's normal among certain crowds. I don't go as regularly as I'd like, due to time constraints (and because Libby is, you know, right at my fingertips), but there's always other people there whenever I go, so folks are using it. And this past summer, when I was taking my son there on Saturdays, we ran into the same families over and over again, so it was certainly as much a part of the routine for them as it was for us!

My library has been temporarily closed since February 2020, the month after I moved here.

I was paying to use the library for our neighboring city but it’s very expensive and wasn’t worth the $350 each year. It takes months to get a book from other branches and I couldn’t reserve them for the branch where they’re located; I was only allowed to check books out from the branch closest to my physical address. Their home improvement section was woefully outdated, and they don’t do anything to promote or even recognize local authors. They don’t even have copies of most local authors’ works (this might be a normal thing in America; I moved here from England where shops and libraries always have a local author’s section).
The children’s section was the most disappointing; we live in Dolly Parton country so libraries here (including the teeny tiny 400 sq ft one where we rented before buying this house) go all out for children’s literacy and library engagement. Except the giant library system in the 4th most affluent county in the state.
I just use Kindle Unlimited now because I feel like I’m getting my money’s worth with it.

I usually go once a week, it would probably be more like every three weeks, if I just got books, since they are a 3-week checkout. But I often get DVDs, which are a 7-day checkout.

I used to. But these days I don't even have time to read the books I already own.

I volunteer at the library and have two cards for different libraries to borrow from.

I used to go to the library every two weeks, but now it's about once a month unless I can't renew my books or I feel super stressed out and need quiet. I love my town's library and I've been going there since I was five, so it feels like a second home to me. I have two library cards because my town's Libby selection isn't that great.

Re: Libraries

(Anonymous) 2024-01-03 03:59 am (UTC)(link)
I have a library card and the libby app. I get ebooks and audiobooks from my library system pretty regularly, but I only go to the library IRL a few times a year - usually when I've found a book rec they only have in paper. There was a long dry spell before I got back to the library, though.

Re: Libraries

(Anonymous) 2024-01-03 04:13 am (UTC)(link)
I don't go to a physical library because it's kind of a PITA to get there but I use their online services all the time. Libby is amazing and it's where I get all my audio books (2-5 each week), I get maybe 3 movies a month off Kanopy, Hooplah is where I get all my comics (legitimately).

I try to get everyone in my life to use Libby. If you've got Audible please just check Libby first! That's all I ask!!!!!

(Anonymous) 2024-01-03 05:26 am (UTC)(link)
I do, but I haven't been for ages. Thanks for spurring me on to go, actually!

We read a lot, but use Kindle and free sources online more often. And of course I read a ton of fanfic and write it.

Re: Libraries

(Anonymous) 2024-01-03 06:02 am (UTC)(link)
Yes I do occasionally. But I l've almost stopped reading books some time ago and even going through my really vast collection of bought books is taking so much time.
But I go for a peace and quiet and different programs they do (concerts, clubs etc).
People around me sneer at libraries and it makes me sad.

Yup, and yup.
It's hard to get some stuff from my library; they have interloan service with other libraries around the state, but the selection isn't always great.
But I get as much from the library as i can, 'cause I can't afford *not* to.

Re: Libraries

(Anonymous) 2024-01-03 07:19 am (UTC)(link)
I go regularly, and have several library cards in two countries.

I've volunteered in two libraries, once in high school and once at a women's health service. Libraries are the best, except when they're noisy. Then they're just noisy.

Re: Libraries

(Anonymous) 2024-01-03 11:44 am (UTC)(link)
I don't go anymore. Still have 2 library cards. 1 for where I currently live and 1 for where my parents live.

I keep telling myself I'll go but when I get home from work/it's the weekend but I usually forget.

Re: Libraries

(Anonymous) 2024-01-03 12:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I used to go all the time. My local library expanded recently and while they now offer some amazing things (cooking classes, computer workshops, a nice cafe etc) it now feels more like a community center than a library. Which is great for a lot of people but it’s too loud and busy for me to really enjoy. Plus I feel like they spend less money on actual books now, the selection isn’t great.

I honestly only got back into remembering libraries existed during covid for some reason. Even though as a healthcare worker I was still working, I got a library card and abused the heck out of the ebook system haha.

Plus our new hospital site actually has a city library branch so it's nice and convenient now that I can borrow physical books. Plus they have games, laptops, tablets, etc for people visiting/in the hospital.

Nothing Breaks Like a Heart by Mark Ronson, sung by Miley Cyrus, entirely due to secret 01.

"Heroes" Who aren't

[personal profile] philstar22 2024-01-03 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
Vaguely inspired by secret 7, but only vaguely. Who are characters who are portrayed as heroic in their source material, but in your opinion aren't actually particularly heroic?
