Oof I've been there. Some people who like side-characters are for whatever reason unable to recognize that they're side characters and as such don't get the same amount of story exposure as a main character will, and then act like the story, or even creator, is somehow evil for this fact? It's fucking weird.

I try to avoid fans like that, but I'm sorry you're having to deal with it from a friend OP, it's annoying af to deal with.

See, my opinion depends on the specific trauma involved.

I have a character I love. There's a single conversation in the game that implies he was sexually assaulted as a child. Canon never addresses it outside this, but the hallmarks are there (he easily could be hypersexual and has trouble with relationships). Instead, this revelation is treated as a joke. If it's something like that, then yeah, I think it's fair they get mad at canon.

A fair way to get mad at canon in that case would be... well, point out that it was bad taste for canon to have included that conversation about sexual assault only to treat it as a joke. Say it shouldn't have been included at all. It's still not fair to say canon is obligated to address it any further if it would distract from the plot, only came up once, and really was meant to be a one-off joke. It might be nice if canon did (canons have made things that were initially just jokes into more serious lore), but it wouldn't necessarily be a better work if it did. That one conversation can just be a case of bad writing and should be criticized for that.

Recognizing that treatment of a beloved character is unfair and not a great way to handle the situation is one thing. Getting so obsessed with the injustices done to a fictional character that you have a big blow-up about it every single time your fandom friend tries to discuss ANY aspect of canon is batshit.

This is what people mean when they say some people need to go outside and touch some grass.

Reminds me of a show where one character apologized to one of the main characters for treating them badly and their relationship improved in the following episodes. Meanwhile their relationship was also shown to have improved with a couple minor characters who they had treated badly, but some fans of those minor characters were upset that THEY hadn't been apologized to, so how dare the character act like they were friends?! How dare canon just ignore the way they were treated?! Why does the creator HATE those characters so much?!

My dudes obviously this character apologized to the minor characters too, the changed relationship was meant to show that, these characters would not be acting nicer toward the person who mistreated them unless they had gotten some proper closure. That is your clue that it happened, it just happened OFFSCREEN because canon can't show everything that happens to every character, especially minor ones. Have an ounce of media literacy I swear.

(Anonymous) 2024-01-06 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
your fave

(Anonymous) 2024-01-06 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
Aside from it being pretty clear through context, it would have required fewer clicks to just Google.

Sincerely,
I learned what blorbos are from this secret

ayrt

I could have, but I don't think it hurts to remind people that their niche terms are not widely understood and if they're going to communicate in a wider sphere, they should help readers out.

Also, me asking probably saved someone else the bother of googling, and I always appreciate when someone does that for me, so.

DA

def not a niche term, but I also appreciate when people define things when asked

I hate it woth such passion

I just learned about this and honestly there has not been a phrase or word that set me off in such a way in forever. Thank god none of my fandom circle uses this dumb term.

I hate it too, it's easily my least favorite fandom term.

I'd wager you had to be there (on tumblr) when the word came to widespread usage. In the context of the post that coined it and the site culture that popularized it, it's a perfectly cromulent word. Running into it outside of its natural habitat feels a bit jarring even to a seasoned tumblrina like myself.

I'm going to guess this is Bucky/Sam.

(Anonymous) 2024-01-06 06:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Sounds like it to me. Sam stans are ... interesting.

(Anonymous) 2024-01-06 07:18 pm (UTC)(link)
You were SO CLOSE.

(Anonymous) 2024-01-06 07:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Bucky/Natasha?

(Anonymous) 2024-01-06 08:17 pm (UTC)(link)
It's also not Bucky/Nat, but it is rare enough that if you correctly guess it and I confirm, I will have more or less outed myself as one of very, very few active participants in this tiny corner of a much larger fandom.
