Popular/loved songs you hate

Are there any really popular or well-known songs that you can't stand?

Most things by Nirvana because of my sister. She listened to them too much.

Probably Running Up that Hill (Had been a fan of Kate Bush in my early teens and got ridiculed for it so bad I gave up being a fan, now hearing her music makes me feel sick...covers of her songs are OK depending on who does them)

Any and all love/breakup/longing songs. Boring as shit.

I don't how popular and loved it is now, but it had huge airplay when it came out and I despised it - Sex and Candy by Marcy Playground.

I was never a fan of Pearl Jam and the only song I name without looking it up is Jeremy and I did not like that song.

I like some of her songs, but I could not stand Christina Aguilera's Genie in a Bottle.

I was a big fan of NSYNC back when, but, man, Girlfriend sounded like a discordant mess to me.

I didn't like Gwen Stefani's Hollaback Girl, or for that matter, No Doubt's Don't Speak.

Christmas music as a whole genre.

Most of Beyonce's solo work is unlistenable to me.

Her voice sounds pretty, but her constant vocal runs feel more like she's showing off what she can do with her voice rather than expressing whatever feeling the song she's singing is supposed to express.

For example, I call "Love on Top" "Key Change, Louder" because that's what she does at the end of the song (for what feels like an eternity to me), as if singing louder equals more emotion. I almost like the song up to that point, but then she ruins it with that nonsense.

I don't feel like she's singing about someone she loves (presumably Jay-Z), she's just showboating.

Do you have a style?

(Anonymous) 2024-01-14 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
I am trying to figure out one.

Re: Do you have a style?

(Anonymous) 2024-01-14 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
Can you narrow that down? A style of clothing, a style of hair, a style of home decoration, a style of dancing, etc etc...??

I have two different styles: professional and comfy.

Clothing alternates between 90s teen boy, middle aged middle class woman, crackhead, and 8 year old dressing themself for the first time.

My home is decorated like a middle class elderly couple’s with a bunch of weird shot thrown in like lenticular horror prints going up the stairway, a dragon statue in the kitchen where most would put a fake plant, and an embroidery sampler that looks all old lady-ish but actually reads “Fuck. - Geralt of Rivia”

I’m a 47 year old woman living paycheck to paycheck.

Fashionwise? I'm glad this became a thing recently, because I didn't really have a name for this besides "minimalist."

I like simple shapes and neutral solid colors and black.

Now that I’m retired, it’s jeans, T-shirts, boots or sneakers. Comfortable clothes I can work in, garden, knit, read, or do shorter hikes in. I’m never going back to corporate professional dress.
Decor-wise, it’s eclectic clutterful. There’s storage for everything, but my current projects are all out around my chair. If I must, I can tidy everything away, but mostly it’s out.
I value comfort over anything now, and I can indulge myself. I highly recommend this approach to life.

Casual to mid-goth. As in when I'm not caring about how I look it's just black clothes in whatever style, but my nicer pieces are very clearly punk/goth I just don't go the full hog like others do because I am 1. bad at dramatic make-up and 2. can't pull off some of the more flamboyant clothes, they just don't look good on me imo. So I go for somewhere in between just wearing all black clothes and full-goth when I dress up. I also have colourful accent pieces, so like I'll be in a goth dress/shirt but my bag is bright pink. That kind of thing.

I used to. Now I am old and don't have time or money for style I want so instead I'm just blah whatever is on sale.

Still figuring it out myself.

I'm somewhere between casual, femme, girly, aiming for refined, but with a touch of trash with care given towards comfort.

I like to be comfortable but I also like to feel cute and girly but also dark/goth-ish vibes, and I've always had a hard leaning toward flashy things that can been seen as tacky.
I'm also aware that I don't have the patience and energy to always be super focused on putting a stunning outfit together so I'm still working on how to fit my preferences together.

Like, I enjoy having slightly flashy coats or jackets because even if I'm in a torn tank and fuzzed up sweatpants, at least my brown faux fur coat is cute and soft! Comfortable shoes that can be worn with jeans or a dress/skirt are awesome.

I'm accepting that I can't fit my tastes into any bubbles but I can keep trying them out to find what works for me.

I'd encourage you to think about other people's styles you want to dress like or you feel is a lot like what you like to wear. It can be famous people, fictional characters, people you know IRL.

Like for me, Zooey Deschanel has always been someone whose style I like a lot. I LOVE Drew Barrymore's flowery girly vibes. I also still turn to "The Craft" for style inspiration. Randomly, last summer I really loved Ryan Gosling's styling in "The Place Beyond the Pines".

I highly encourage for fashion exploration as a means of expressing yourself so do you, OP! Have fun with it, don't think there is a right or wrong way to find your own style! <3

Mine's probably prep on a budget combined with needing to be ready to move. (Unlike a previous anon, I actually have an aversion to some natural fibers and find nylon/other synthetic blends less irritating because I tend to sweat a lot.)

When I had a style it was because I was into jpop and watched a lot of jdramas and talk shows and so on, and I really liked the way Japanese women dressed. Very feminine but not sexy, at least not in the way Western fashion often is.

Go for:
- lots of skirts
- lots of blouses/shirts
- bold colors (I loved jewel tones though pastels would work too, rarely bright, never neon, never too many colors or patterns on one piece)
- each item a classic version of itself, never a bland item trying to add pep by being "an X, but with Y"
- and then combine it to make it just a bit different from the standard, for example: dark yellow pants, a dark red shirt under a dark blue pullover -> unusually bold colors; a knit poncho with a classic cut shirt -> unusual style combination; and so on. Like, that red blouse/blue pullover or that poncho with a jeans would be boring, but with an other color/style, it's suddenly interesting.

Stay away from/use very sparingly:
- cleavage
- sport or leisure items (ex: hoodies)
- "this-goes-with-anything" items (ex: jeans)
- "this-goes-with-anything" colors (black/white/grays, beige, dark blue, light blue)

The wardrobe was easy to build and maintain and was distinct without being overly obvious as a ~style~. I got a lot of compliments and felt really good wearing it. Stuff happened and I could not keep it up, but I still love that style and if I get the opportunity to build a proper wardrobe again, I will go back to that style in a heartbeat.

USA-ians, how is the arctic weather treating you?

Our heavy snow forecast turned into ice instead. We now have trees down all over the city and almost a quarter of the populace is without power! Is everyone staying warm?

We got a bunch of snow here in my part of Iowa this week and we're still under a blizzard warning until midnight 'cause the wind's howling like crazy. And the temperatures are supposed to be below zero at least through Tuesday.

So, yeah. Mother Nature finally clued in that it's wintertime and we got hit with it :p.
