Comfort meals?

(Anonymous) 2024-01-20 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
One of mine that I've been indulging in is chik'n nuggets dipped in applesauce.

Spaghetti and marinara. It's fast, easy, filling, and texturally satisfying.

Peanut butter sandwiches with milk. That’s it. That’s the whole meal. It makes me feel happy and safe and full.

Boxed mac and cheese. Preferably walmart brand. With a shit ton of pepper on top.

Minestrone, broccoli, or bean soup, pasta with butter, grilled cheddar cheese on rosemary sourdough, and theoretically my fave green salad but only if I could poof it into existence from nothing, because making the dressing and toppings from scratch and sourcing some of the ingredients is a lot of work for something that doesn't keep well.

Also homemade hot chocolate mocha, but that's not exactly a meal.

To be painfully British: cheese on toast. preferably with either Marmite or Tabasco.

Boiled pork or chicken with greens and ginger and lemongrass (with rice)

Ramen with cracked egg and a slice of cheddar cheese

Fried/scrabbled eggs with rice

Spaghetti and marinara sauce

Lemon and pepper pasta

Ice cream

Frozen pizza with extra cheese and pepperoni

Even when tired/depressed I try to cook the bare minimum--even if it's just semolina or instant noodles. If I'm past everything and in need of urgent pick-me-up I stoop down to opening a bag of crisps/chips + a piece of cheese & some fruit on the side. And way too much chocolate of course.

What are things people do in fanfic that just throw you out of the fic?

(Anonymous) 2024-01-20 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I know we've talked about how terrible many writers are at kids. But I've also noticed how terrible writers are with writing parents. In so many fics, parents are overly trusting of other adults to watch their kids. "Oh, we've only met twice but I trust you to watch my kid every day without me."

Massive OOCness is the biggest for me. There is certainly a range of interpretations. But if a character has absolutely no resemblance to canon other than their name, that's an instant backbutton for me.

Generally I avoid anything to do with my profession or anything I have a lot of personal experience with. The more you know about something the more you see how little most writers do.

When people use all capitals to denote shouting. It's just too much and so unnecessary. You can write the shouting in context, having it explicitly there just hurts my eyeballs.

Also OT3/poly for characters who barely socialise with others, let alone should be in relationships with (1) other person. Like I get writing fic where it digs painfully into getting into something functional for everybody, but the ones that don't even try are the worse. It just reads as extremely OOC to me. You need healthy communication skills for any relationship. I just can't see poly relationships working out if the story doesn't build on that communication.

People pushing agendas or spamming off-topic/bashing tags, or doing something similar in their author notes. Also character bashing, and characters being OOC for no reason.

When a character does something that makes no sense. Like, not even no sense for that specific character, but No One would do that. Usually it's because the author needs to get the characters into a certain situation (and can't figure out how to do it realistically so they just force it) or doesn't know how anything actually works.

characters having kids when it would be completely OOC for them to do that

Pause mid-scene to describe, in fashion magazine detail, what they or another character is wearing.

Character bashing. I don't mean "this character is evil in canon but here they're even worse", I mean "in canon these characters are friendly but ACTUALLY A is a saint and B is a terrible monster! We all hate B! Let's write about how terrible B is and how everyone hates them and loves A."

What are some fandoms you got into only after the canon was concluded and the fandom had died down?

Casual game rec?

(Anonymous) 2024-01-20 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Anyone got a good rec for a casual game, preferably one on steam? I miss the days of Super Mario World. I want just something that's casual and fun I can dip in and out of.

My own rec: Dorfromantik. If you like map/city building you might like this one. I find the colors, music, and just overall design so soothing. The only downside is I get a bit hypnotized by the whole thing and suddenly way more time than planned has gone by.

low effort: Kraft mac with hot dogs cut up in it

high effort: my mom's chicken noodle soup recipe. It's a day-long ordeal involving handmade noodles but it's max comfort for a week afterward.
