i wish i had bigger balls to defend problematic ships/the right to ship ANYTHING... i hate the anti rhetoric and wish it never existed, blah. in a perfect world, amirite?

I'm glad you had that experience, anon, and I wish I could've seen it. I've seen no indications personally that The Kids Are Getting Better... I still regularly come across "proship means problematic shipper" and "red flag! pedo dogwhistle!" about any generalized message about being considerate of others in fandom who like different stuff than you do.

It's possible I was just in the right place at the right time, and us folks outnumbered the antis. I think even one proshipper was a mod, so I'm sure modeling good behavior had something to do with it. I was honestly impressed by how, no matter how much ugly language the other side used, nobody took the bait and let it devolve into wanky shitflinging. It didn't feel good at the time, but in retrospect, I'm glad I said something. And I'm glad civility was really pushed for.

I feel like people are starting to turn a corner on this. Being censorious and attacking other fans turns out to not be very fun, especially when the firing squad is circular, and when the people who claim to be the most righteous and moral behave in abominable ways.

OP to secret maker

Thanks for turning my comment into a secret!

good on you for standing up to them, OP!

I wonder how these antis feel about Lolita.

Like this isn't anything new. People have been writing shit that goes into fucked up territory for ages. Honestly, if you can't separate fiction from reality, you got more things to worry than just some silly fic someone wrote.

People write and read fucked up shit to work through fucked up shit.

I honestly worry about those who don't. Everybody's got dark impulses; how are they dealing with theirs?

Hell, a lot of the time it doesn't even have anything to do with that. Sometimes it's just "I find this thing hot IN FICTION" with the knowledge that said thing isn't okay in reality, but fiction isn't reality so it's perfectly fine to find it hot and enjoy it there.

I've heard of antis claiming Lolita is actually pedo porn because they take the unreliable narrator being a pedo at face value. Tells me they haven't read the damn book. Or know that the original author specifically requested printers/publishers NOT to put a picture of a little girl on the cover.

(Anonymous) 2024-02-03 03:22 am (UTC)(link)
And the thing is that even in his unreliability, he manages to grasp a sliver of the reality of the situation. He knows that what he did was fucked up, and that he stole her childhood from her.

I wonder if part of the problem is the film adaptations. I haven't seen the Kubrick one, but I saw the one from the '90s with Jeremy Irons before I read the book, and it definitely paints a different picture. The acknowledgement of his wrongdoing is more muted, and he's portrayed as much less of an asshole than how he appears in the book.

On one hand, I approve the mindset of the secret and think the principle is sound. On the other hand, my immediate, visceral response to all of this is a resounding "holy fuck all of the people involved in this shit need to get OFF the internet and go OUTSIDE and interact with OTHER HUMAN BEINGS in REAL LIFE already."

Touch the grass! Be the grass!

OP

I don't necessarily disagree, but in my defense, I never bring up this topic outside of F!S. Certainly not around folks who have a hard time separating fiction from reality. I just felt the need to say something because they would not stop bringing it up in chat and acting hostile despite repeated warnings. (Thankfully, the mods took measures.)

My issue with "both sides" is that it only works in situations where both sides are open to reason. I don't deny I do need to get outside more. But not because some assholes decided to ruin fandom for other people.

(Anonymous) 2024-02-03 09:11 am (UTC)(link)
DA, but I totally agree with you, anon. The proship side is literally only debating this issue because antis go into rants about how shipping children is pedophilia. Otherwise, I would spend exactly zero of my time or attention on this issue. But if it's being raised in my own spaces directed at me and people I care about, then yes, I am going to give that attitude pushback and get into an argument.

The "both sides" narrative is utter bullshit. This started with antis. It always starts with antis. Defending oneself over serious accusations being lobbed at me in my own hobby spaces isn't an indication I am too online or "obsessing" over trivial matters. This is an absolutely reasonable action for anyone who doesn't want their hobby spaces taken over by toxic extremists to take...

Exactly. Unfortunately, most fandoms have a share of those people and social media at present is structured in such a way that they can make things go viral very quickly among people who may not have context for the original argument.

You don't have to be terminally online to care that teenagers are doxxing people.

"holy fuck all of the people involved in this shit need to get OFF the internet and go OUTSIDE and interact with OTHER HUMAN BEINGS in REAL LIFE already."

I feel like someone can interact with people offline and still engage in this type of thinking, though.

I contain multitudes. Everyone else only exists from what I see of them, so they must spend 100% of their time caring only about this.
