I've read exactly one second person fic that blew my mind because the characterisation and writing was so topnotch. Unreliable narrator in second person is amazing when handled well.

I think the issue with first person/second person is that they have to be written with such a clear voice so it doesn't divulge into terrible y/n bs.

I haven't found a good first person fic I've like. Good first person book tho, Flowers for Algernon, The Color Purple, Lolita come to mind.

I'm sure there are ones out there that are good. It just isn't my cup of tea. It makes it hard for me to immerse myself in the story.

Ahh yeah, that's interesting cause first person/second person is used specifically to get readers in the mindset of the main character. Or rather to have it be more immersive. But yeah, it's not for everyone.

I'm always quite surprised by the endless threads hating on first/second-person POV on f!s because the best-received fic I've ever written in any fandom is mixed third and second-person POV. No one has ever said they minded the POV, and quite a few that they loved it/felt "personally attacked" lmao

It really is just a matter of execution.

I think it's cause the window of success for fics like that is so narrow that for the most part, it fails miserably.

It's either really really good, or really bad. No in between.

Hah I suppose it could be one of those things that's like doing a flip: you either can or you can't there's no in-between. And one is impressive and the other is a face-plant.

Well, I think the hate is for a couple of reasons. First, because it's kinda weird to read a fic in first or second person when canon is in third person - it messes with the immersion. Second, because those are trickier to do well than third person is, and let's be real here the majority of fic writers are not that skilled. There are way fewer first and second person perspective fics out there than there are third person fics, and proportionally more of them are terrible. I've personally never encountered a first or second person perspective fic that was well-written, like, ever, and I've been reading fic, for a lot of different fandoms, since about 2002. You might just be that rare writer who's actually skilled enough to manage it well.

Ah, that could be part of it, the fic in question was for a second-person video game fandom. There's no shift in the original perspective.

And I agree that most people in fandom aren't skilled writers (yet) because most of them are beginners, but there are also many 30+ year olds who've been writing for decades. There's not one but several traditionally published authors in my current fandoms alone. Every fandom I've ever been in (since the 90s) has at least a few authors who incredibly skilled, and of those some will always want to play with perspective, so I have a hard time believing one would never run into a good first/second person fic in 22 years unless one is actively avoiding them.

It's fine to just have been driven away by bad experiences, though.

DA

As someone whose been in fandom since the early 2000s, I'd say it's plausible someone might not have come across a good 1st or 2nd person fic, depending on your reading habits.

I typically read shippy fic for canons that are written from the 3rd perspective, and once those filters are applied in AO3 I don't think I've ever come across a 2nd perspective fic other than reader fic (which I don't read).

I don't think I've ever seen a 1st person fic outside of (maybe) my days as a fandom baby on ff.net. (Epistolary, yes, love that, but not true 1st person).

So yeah, I would say I can't seen a good one of either mostly because I've seen so few of either.

Thay said, I personally have nothing against either perspective and quite enjoy it outside of fandom.

Yeah, for me the best second person fic I ever read was from the Outlast fandom and it was profound enough that I gave a few other second POV fics a chance- sadly, they didn't live up to the first one, but I don't mind checking every once in a while instead of outright ignoring them.
