What was a "cool" choice of college in the early nineties?

Re: Questions thread

(Anonymous) 2024-02-03 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Reed? Texas? NYU? Arizona? Georgia? Amherst or Smith?

Just running some stuff up the flagpole here and see who salutes, really.

I think it really depended on what circle you were in.

depends on what you mean by cool. for football schools: ohio state, michigan, alabama. basketball schools: university of kentucky, duke, north carolina, kansas. for ~fun~ intellectual schools: stanford. for hippie-ish schools: ucla berkeley. florida schools and santa barbara in general were considered party schools and nonserious. coolest ivy was probably dartmouth or brown, although columbia is in ny so it might be "cooler".

in truth, this is state dependent and every state has their own 'cool' school.

eta: ucla probably was the closest to "on tv it was used to reference cool" and encompasses some of the other categories. also i would agree with anon above the nyu was also in that category.

in the early 90s we were still pressured to choose a college based on career path and test scores, not coolness, unless you specifically had no path and wanted to go to a party school. And the "top party schools" were never what you would imagine. Smart? Apply to Harvard. Hippie? Apply to UC-Berkeley. Party? There was some school in TX that had the title some years but weirdly UW-Madison also held it for a while. idk I wasn't cool enough to know party schools or bother applying.

University of Washington, but anywhere in the Pacific Northwest was considered cool back then.

Re: Questions thread

Boulder? Or somewhere like Santa Cruz.

The Princeton Review’s top party schools from 1993-1999:

1993: Tulane University of Louisiana
1994: University of Rhode Island
1995: University of Rhode Island
1996: University of Rhode Island
1997: Florida State University
1998: West Virginia University
1999: State University of New York-Albany

Playboy magazine's 1987 list had California State University, Chico ranked first. In 2002, the list was topped by Arizona State University. Playboy didn't publish any lists in between.

Does anyone have any recs for a documentary about Wyoming?

Re: Questions thread

The only thing that comes immediately to mind is this thing I watched years ago about a supervolcano under Yellowstone. But I looked it up and found one by Wyoming PBS, and since the local PBS station tends to do a decent job for things in my state, it might be worth checking out. It's an hour-long one called Over Wyoming on YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jo40xoJP1hQ

Surprisingly, not at all! Although if it's true his dad manages the Twitter account, I'm sure he's shielding the kid from the worst of it.

US customs lost package?

(Anonymous) 2024-02-03 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I've had no shipping updates for some (non invasive and non drug) flower seeds coming from the UK to the US for almost two weeks now. Tracking says it was processed through a USPS ISC facility on 1/18, was inbound into customs, arrived at a USPS facility still on 1/18 a couple hours later, and the last update from 1/22 had no time listed, just "moving through network, in transit to next facility." It never said "cleared customs" or whatever the actual wording is.

Overall usps tracking says it's on track to reach its destination, though, not "detained/destroyed by customs" or whatever.

Do I just assume it's taking awhile and wait? Do I file a lost package report or claim? Should I assume it was tossed in a dumpster or incinerator and I'll get an angry letter from customs enforcement? Should I just place the same order again?

Idk, people have mailed me seeds (and cheese, which I'd think was a bigger issue!) from overseas when they were on vacation with no problem, and I've bought seeds from this company before and they showed up in less than two weeks. I know plants actively growing in soil are way more complicated and have never tried to order any from overseas.

Two weeks without updates? Yeah, they are gone.

Re: US customs lost package?

(Anonymous) 2024-02-03 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I would say just wait it out. I sent something priority mail to the UK and I was told it would take 7-10 days. It took about 3 days to make it through customs and then the tracking froze for three weeks (thoigh still saying it was on track) before suddenly showing up at its intended destination.

Wait it out. USPS was at a standstill for three whole days the week they were processed. And there is a huge SNAFU in the network because of the Houston machines getting taken offline before the new ones were delivered. Everything is running slower and they will literally never catch up to the speeds before the mid January North America freeze because that was also the last week for seasonal hires.

Why does mpreg gross ppl out?

Is it the biological impossibility that's a factor? Which sounds strange to get caught up on when we lit have werewolf au, wingfic, tentacle fic and apparently really horrible fluids being used as lube not to mention a lot of impossible sex being written. As a kink goes, it's pretty tame all things considered...

Asking for a raise

(Anonymous) 2024-02-03 10:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I know the conventional advice is to document all your responsibilities & accomplishments, and collect data on what your company or competitors are paying for jobs that cover similar responsibilities.

Anyone tried this lately? How did it go? Or anyone have other strategies that worked?
