I had the same experience but I stumbled into conclaves of older fans via cosplay so I learned some of the history firsthand. 'Zines is the answer but it comes with the caveat of finding out about the zine in the first place. That seemed to be some combination of other people you know, fantasy books with order forms in the back, comic book shops, and mail-orders/actual fan magazines, depending on where you lived - hard to pop into the local comic book store if your town doesn't have one. But there was always a trail to follow, from a Superman movie to a mail order catalog for comics to ads for fan activities, or from toy commercials to your friend in school who knows were to get all the good shit, or a blurb in the back of your Tor fantasy novel leading you down a mail-order rabbit hole. It was all part of a web of real people and the postal service!

I miss the Daria fandom.

I don't think I've ever 'related' to any character on tv, other than in the most superficial way possible (they like lemon drops! yay!). I mean...they're characters in a made-up world (even those based on real-world events). Why *should* i relate?

All of this.

I love the fanfics where the 'hoo rah, 'Murica!!!' nonsense is tamped way down and the SG:A characters actually use their brains instead of just running around shooting shite.

Well, for pretty obvious reasons, early 2000's of fandom, which, for me, was when I actually found and got involved in fandom. First Harry Potter, then Buffy, and then Supernatural hit like a tidal wave and was happily swept away.

Met some of the most awesome people (one of which became my bff4evah), wrote a ton, read even more, had so many interesting, lively, outrageous conversations with so many fun, smart people....

It was just damn fun.

I can't watch it anymore, but I think a lot of that is down to bad associations in my head now (Whedon, Brendon, and even Boreanaz, a little). And, to be honest, I stopped watching the original run part way through the sixth season because I didn't really like where the show had gone. If I did rewatch it, I don't know if the quips and tropes (some of which it originated) would be cringey or entertaining.

I remember all the Jack Frost crossovers with other animated movies. Poor fans just din't have anyone to ship him with in his own movie.

da
Yes.
LJ was a bit clique for my tastes.

(Anonymous) 2024-02-05 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
Heh. Obviously you didn’t remember much about the show because everyone knows to start with season 2. You can maybe go back and watch the last couple episodes of season one but personally I find that to be more trouble than it’s worth.

I absolutely love this show but I only ever watch seasons 2-4. I hated so much about s4 but I LOVED everyone hanging out at Giles’ place so I watch it for that, plus Hush is one of the best episodes of any show ever.

LJ was focused on reactions, recaps, theories, rec lists, screencaps, etc. It's only AO3 and FFN that are finished works.

at least Batman is human right.

I miss fandom and pairing dedicated fic archives. I’m eternally grateful to the people who keep any going these days!
I miss webrings, too. And mailing lists. And forums. Basically everything 1995-2004 fandom.

Weirdly, I relate to Superman more just cause he’s adopted like me. Except he gets to know about his origins and he’s adopted by a loving family.

You can find a list of largest running archives via Fanfic plugin for Calibre. They also list archives that went under in recent years.

Oh yes! This! I had a lot of problems with this show and always hated when it came on. I always felt like she and her mother were far more sinister than the laugh track wanted me to know.

It’s worth noting that young me did not understand how there were two Darrens and I was especially conflicted about feeling sorry for JR Ewing (this was right about the time headlines around the world were asking who shot him). …I wasn’t very bright LOL

+1

I personally don’t like 3D animation but I’m at least aware that for about ten years now kids don’t like 2D and rarely engage with it. It’s mindblowing how many friends have tried to share classics with their children and the kids are bored or even downright derisive about it.

There were a lot of things that could have helped this movie but going 2D wasn’t one of them.

Except while Superman may have been born on an alien planet and be an alien, he grew up on earth and his personality is kind, caring small-town human. Maybe that isn't relatable to everyone, but it is a bit disingenuous to say he isn't relatable just because he's not originally from earth.

I was in the RotG fandom and I can assure you, they did. Oh boy, they did. HiJack and Jelsa were bigger, for sure, but there was definitely Jackrabbit, Black Ice, White Christmas, and Frost Bite. Poor kid was the bicycle.

I'm going through something similar. I even developed disordered eating for awhile because I just didn't know what to was safe to eat anymore.

I think you could say this about at least 90% of CGI movies these days. They're not CGI because audiences like that, they're CGI because CGI is cheaper than traditional animation now.

AYRT

LOL, I posted that in total sincerity. I can't relate to solving problems through punching, but I often feel out of step and out of place in society/humanity. But I'm not in Superman fandom, so maybe his upbringing makes him feel more human than I do!
