That was me.

Back when I was full of outrage over the atrocities in Gaza, I joined a pro-Palestinian discord and I was feeling pretty empowered being with people who were loudly protesting Israel's government's genocidal policies. It was going well, then, wham, suddenly it got very anti-Semitic. I mean hardcore anti-Jewish talk started happening and I kind of went into shock because I couldn't believe what I was reading was being 'said' in the open like that. Others in the discord wagged their finger at the bigoted posters, but nobody got banned. The people spouting the anti-Semitic garbage got quieter about their bigotry but didn't go away and it was like it never happened.

I don't trust groups like that anymore. I can be against the Palestinian genocide on my own, or with people I know and trust. Anything else invites letting Nazis and anti-Semites into the house. No thanks.

And way too many pro-Palestinian activists aren't vetting their members closely enough because they're "For The Cause, So Come On In!" It's beyond disturbing!

I haven't seen any blatant antisemitism in the spaces I hang, but I have seen plenty of what looks to be full-on support for Hamas and the deaths of Israeli civilians, cloaked in the plausible deniability of "Um sweetie, obviously when we say we don't care what Hamas does to Israel, we mean the Israeli government and military! We shouldn't have to spell it out for you like a little baby!" and other shit like that.

I'm the pro-palestinan protest going anon from above.
I actually feel you people. I've been into pro-palestina activism for almost a decade now and I've never seen such a great infiltration of alt-right or simply antisemitic people in our ranks like I've seen in recent months. I find it pretty strange and alienating, in fact.
It seems like we are now fighting alongside people who have direct opposite values than us (as in people like me who are palestina sympathizer and have been criticising Israel for their crimes for a while) and I can't really trust anyone anymore, especially online. Luckily my local group seems fine... for the most part at least.

BTW I call this antisemitic behaviour, too. Is it not? Usually they are pretty overlapped. I wouldn't call this simple anti-zionism. I know that people online say awful shit just to rile up people, but this is pretty abhorrent.

Yeah I've had to blacklist so many tags and shit on twitter and tumblr because it went from completely reasonable criticism of the Israeli government and what they're doing, to treating any and all Israeli civilian deaths as 'not an issue' because of where they were born, to lumping Israeli civilians in with their government so that they can hate an entire population for being 'evil', to the kind of anti-semetic talk that racists use, to attacking non-Isreali Jewish people, to lumping all Jewish people in with Isreal and branding them all as 'evil' to justify any harassment and violence happening to them.

So much of the online left have really shown who they are and it's horrifying. It's not about the actual victims: every civilian in Palestine(and the Israelis who have died), it's about them finally having a 'good' reason to hate all Jewish people.

I think it's the same thing that happened with Russian people when Russia invaded Ukraine. Everyone began to hate on innocent Russian people who actually hate their own government (especially queer people). That was fucking egregious and ignorant, too.
This is I'm not convinced fully that many people on the left are maliciously and consciously antisemitic, but a lot of them are at least complicit in the spread of hatred toward Jewish people.

I think that the internet make participating to politics or commenting to these incredibly complicated issues way to accessible (and even expected from some public figures), so even well meaning people just fall into pitfalls of spreading misinformation, hatred and even actually end up justifying genocides. Even if they actually would've never ever thought something like that before entering their echo chamber of choice.

This is actually pretty scary to me. I'm not a particularly intelligent person, but I try to educate myself to the best of my possibilities before saying my opinion regarding complicated issues like genocides and wars. The "internet" is just dumbing down all the discourse. I'm very worried.

It was that way from the beginning. People said that October 7th was "beautiful." They said that "there are no civilians in Israel," so it didn't matter that children had been killed and women had been raped.

People, by and large, have no problem with prejudice and with committing atrocities, and this is regardless what side of the political spectrum they're on. They just don't like it when their side is the one getting fucked.
