Anyone else dealing with insomnia?

(Anonymous) 2024-03-03 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
I miss sleep. I am exhausted all the time but can only seem to manage about 3hrs of sleep. The other day I got 6hrs and it was the longest sleep I've had in months and it was glorious. I felt so good that day. But the next night it was back to nothing. I'm trying to change my diet and up my exercise but it doesn't seem to be having any effect, but thats only been the past 2 weeks or so.

I have my occasional bounds of insomnia that are related to my bipolar disorder.
Usually I get almost no sleep for a couple of weeks (max 4 hours a night), but I don't feel tired if not for the burning of my eyes. It can devolve into mania and psychosis so it's not ideal, but it's temporary so I luckily just have to endure it for a short period every few months.
It usually happens when the weather is changing and there is more intense sunlight during my day (so mostly spring and summer). Maybe your condition is somehow seasonally related, too?

I don't use any sleep medication, but I try to relax myself with lavender perfumed oils (applied on my temples with soothing massages) and melatonin + valerian root supplements. I find valerian root to be the best to at least relax myself a little bit.

Oh I also try not to eat sugar or simple carbs. Those really make me hyper and make me wake up in the middle of the night super hungry regardless of when I ate them during the day. I have no idea why...

I’ve been dealing with insomnia for the last 20 odd years. since college maybe?? I’ll occasionally have a nice peaceful sleep but I find napping in the afternoon is better for resting.

I've been dealing with new insomnia since early December. I've tried improving my sleep hygiene, exercise, massage, etc but nothing helped. I'll be so tired I can't keep my eyes open, my brain will be quiet (hence the new insomnia), but I'll just lie there for hours until I finally fall asleep at 2 in the morning. I talked to my doctor and she recommended melatonin and also gave me a prescription for sleeping pills. The melatonin works best for me, even over the prescription pills. About 40 min after taking them and I'm out like a light and sleep the whole night through.

(bipolar anon here) if melatonin is enough for you, try not to take the sleeping pills together, too. Depending on what type of pills they are they could potentially mess with your deep sleep cycle so you can fall asleep but not really fully rest. It's the reason why I personally can't take sleeping pills. They'd be pretty "lethal" for my condition.
Sleeping pills are good as an emergency remedy, but taking them long run is detrimental, it would seem.
(please do your own research on this. I read some scientific literature with my therapist and I was convinced that they are not for me, but obviously everyone is different! Take care!)

AYRT

Yeah, I don't mix them. Both the sleeping pills and the melatonin say not to take them for more than two months at a time, so I switched to the pills after two months on melatonin. XD Every once and a while I check to see if I can sleep without either of them again.

I have an elderly dog that wakes me up every 2-3 hours throughout the night, does that count? I miss sleep but I also am stressed about the dog. Fun combo.

Yeah, it's felt like a lifelong struggle to get a good night's rest. The older I get the harder it seems to be. What I've been doing lately is having white noise to help me sleep (rain sounds, fireplace sounds, cozy cafe with jazz music, audiobooks), I take melatonin gummies most nights (only if I know for sure I will be able to sleep for at least 6 hours).
They help but I still wake up after only a couple of hours of sleep most nights.

Most days I have a fan on and it's one of those fans you can set a timer for so I usually set it for 6 hours (8 if I get into bed early enough).

Some Friday nights I smoke A LOT of weed and knock out. YMMV with the effectiveness of helping me get a good night's sleep though.

I do know that I am highly stressed and stress affects my sleep.
But you know, I feel like the stresses that affect me the most are things that are out of my control. Like, yeah, I need more money not to worry that I'm one bad medical/car emergency away from destitution. Them's the cards handed to me but IDK....trying my best...

i've been avoiding biotin (B7) in vitamin supplements and have been taking B12 and it seems to help me sleep better. be advised that you shouldn't take B12 with vitamin C because they cancel each other out. same with magnesium and calcium.

it might help to get a blood test for vitamins like magnesium and iron to see if you're deficient in something or getting too much of something else (such as biotin which can be sleep disruptive.) labs can be expensive but it may be possible to find cheaper discount labs in your area if you look for them. i got my labs done by one and they were really good and way cheaper.
