Who's your favorite character from the X-Men and why?

(Anonymous) 2024-03-26 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Goes without saying that this thread is inspired by today's Secret #1. Heh.

Always been fond of Nightcrawler and seeing all the different visual interpretations of him over the years. Just a great design that artists can have a lot of fun with.

I fell in love with Rogue and Gambit (as a pair and as individuals) as a teen and while I'm not really into XMen anymore that fondness for them still holds.

Jean Gray or Magneto. Not sure which. Both are awesome.

Rogue and Nightcrawler! Plus Storm.
And Gambit.
And Beast.
And Kitty.
Oh, and Wolverine even though everyone else only like the movie version (I prefer the comics version over the cartoon though).
And this one is kinda off topic and kinda not: the original X-23 from NYX and her early X-Men appearances. She is the first character I have ever related to instead of wanting to emulate.

Nightcrawler became my fave with X-Men Evolution and I've enjoyed every version of him since, continuing my tendency to enjoy the least human-looking character in any given cast.

Re: Who's your favorite character from the X-Men and why?

My time has come. X-men Evolution was my first online fandom ever back in my fan forums days and it had lead me onto the first two movies - then onto the comics that I use to read religiously until around 2016-ish, but still always had a special place in my heart.

Nightcrawler was my favorite; mostly because of X-Men Evo tbh, where he had a bigger role on that show compared to every other adaption. Looking back, as a 13 year old kid I had a lot of body issues between 'being too ugly' and never fitting into whatever the hell being a girl was suppose to be (which lead to being bullied to shit for 5 years at an all girls school -fun); so Nightcrawler showing that insecurity in his appearance on the show felt very relatable to me.
Then when I got into the comics and found out more versions of his character - the fact that he was catholic without being 'religion is my personality' or 'God hates all gays' about it felt safe for me as a kid being raised in that faith but having no place in it on account of how I was going to burn in hell anyways (I'm ex-catholic now, but in a weird way it was a comfort while going in the process of letting go at that time). Especially stories where Kurt was accused of being a demon and being so hated for things beyond his control, just felt very relatable to me - while at the same time I loved the other aspect of his personality as a friend to the other X-men and his own sense of humor/adventure. Plus his design was really cool too.

Also he's to blame for being the first character that got me into multi-shipping, because I had wanted to read all the Nightcrawler fics no matter who he was shipped with (but my OTPs were definitely Todd/Kurt for X-Men Evo and Logan/Kurt for the comics - in fact I have the legendary butt-naked Nightcrawler standing in front of Wolverine comic cover as one of my lockscreens on my phone lol).

I could honestly go on forever with a list of other favorites like Wolverine, Storm, Rogue, Mystique, Shadowcat, Beast and Magneto - but Nightcrawler is definitely the top favorite :'D

A couple incarnations of Toad were honestly genuinely hot. Todd Tolansky, one of my earliest fictional crushes, was voiced by Noel Fisher who I would unwittingly fall for multiple times over the next two decades with various other roles of his even when not knowing they were all in fact Noel Fisher.

Rogue and Nightcrawler. Also Storm.

Storm! She wasn't my favourite in the animated series (though I did love her over-dramatic presence) but I loved her in the comics and still do. Also have a great fondness for Professor X/Magneto long before the movies cemented that as a popular (and well-deservedly so!) ship!

Rogue has always been my favorite in all her variations.

That reading fanfiction in a mostly adult occupied private fan archive had an effect on my vocabulary. When my mom took me to a homeschool EOG test proctor, they told her I recognized SAT words

It was a nice self esteem boost I really needed at the time because the whole reason I was in homeschool was that my middle school has put me in a class that straight up just wouldn't teach much and my self esteem had just been in the gutter. So that helped :)

That I really, really didn't get politics. It was the year of the Iran-Contra hearings and all these congressmen were acting outraged or surprised by secrecy and lies, when, to this 12-year-old's knowledge, secrets and lies within the executive branch had been pretty common, historically. I had not yet realized how much theatrics played a part in politics.

Secret maker here with a request.

(Anonymous) 2024-03-27 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
Normally I don't try to gatekeep secret content because that's not something I feel I can do well i.e. telling who's trolling and who isn't. I generally don't have a problem making peoples' controversial secrets if they're sincerely held beliefs - that's one of the many reasons why it might be a secret, after all! That said, there were a few comment secrets that pushed the boundaries in the last "Secrets you don't want to make" thread, and I have a few things to say.

* I think the people who leave comments about Donald Trump and Republicans must surely know that they're highly unlikely to pass muster with Case, even if you claim that contemporary politics is a fandom.

* I understand there's been some recent disagreement about whether or not hobbies count as a fandom. There are definitely logical arguments for and against this, and I'm not interested in rehashing that here. I'm also not thrilled with the possibility that people are submitting fake secrets to prove a point about a hobby they don't sincerely regard as a fandom, even if they think it's funny to do so.

* I would hope that even people who like stirring the pot or trolling this community for fun would recognize that Case puts a lot of work into keeping this community running, and it would be sad to spoil it for others. Please don't do that.

* I also want to say that it takes time out of my schedule to make the secrets, so I would prefer that people take their ideological debates and is-this-fandom arguments to the General Comments instead of trying to start a fight via comment secrets.

Lastly - and this is a general rule - secrets do have a size limit, and there's a hard limit to my design skills. Wall o' texts don't really work well, and if your secret (regardless of its content) is super long, it's going to be difficult fitting all that text onto an image without teensy tiny font that's likely to be unreadable. I don't want to be a killjoy here and really, most comment secrets are no problem whatsoever! But please keep in mind that if your secret is very long, I might not be able to make it.

Thanks for reading and hope your day is going well,

a secret maker

Weirdly cute animals

[personal profile] philstar22 2024-03-27 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
Saw an opossum yesterday when I was bringing out the trash. It looked like a giant rat and was honestly really cute in a strange way.

What animals do you think are cute that others might not or what animals have a weird thing that is really adorable anyway?

Silly media problems.

I'm a night owl and sometimes I just want to have something on in the background to kinda-sorta-but-not-really watch that's comforting and not too noisy and I can never decide what. Like seriously, I end up just randomly searching and racked with indecision.
