Glad I wasn't on shift this weekend, this selection would never have gotten me through a whole shift.

Best characters/Best worldbuilding

[personal profile] philstar22 2024-04-07 08:09 pm (UTC)(link)
What fictional universes do you think have the best characters overall? How about best world building? What universes manage to do both really well?

Discworld, to both.

WH40k does the best lore and worldbuilding, but only the Caiphas Cain [HERO OF THE IMPERIUM!!!] books do good character.

I think the original Guild Wars had really solid world building and characters. I actually cared what happened to them. I don't really feel the same about the characters in GW2, but the world building is still top notch in my opinion. And I love all the nods within the world to the lore and the original game.

I think ff14 does a good job with it's world building and it's characters, it's not 100% perfectly done and there's some silly plot-conveniences here and there but they've done such a good job of crafting their story over 10 years that I don't mind when some things slip through. The characters are all lovely as well, I enjoy interacting with them all.

The world of Neir/Drakenguard is an absolute mind-fuck but I do love it. It's very winding and sprawling but that just pulled me in. I don't think the characters are the strong point however, more how all the games fit together and are used to explore the themes Yoko taro wants to tell.

And I have been very impressed with the world-building and characters of The Orange of The Priory Tree universe. I get how people can bounce off of the book at first because it is a lot of information to take in, but it's worth it and I'm over half-way through the book and I love most of the characters. They're all well done, hero, villain and those who are more in the middle. It's a good, solid setting imo.

Not sure if 'over all', but The Expanse is excellent in both.
Also, the Cherryh Merchanter series is awesome, as is her Fortress series, both for sustained world building and characters.

One Piece is my answer to both but esp worldbuilding. Oda has managed to be internally consistent for 30 years while also remembering his characters have barely aged 2-3 years, it's amazing.

Do you think blogging/journaling will ever have a resurgence in popularity?

(Anonymous) 2024-04-07 09:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Do you think people will ever get sick of video and visual form of social media (tiktok, insta, etc) and have a fallback to slower reading heavy forms like LiveJournal in it's heyday? Will DreamWidth suddenly be trending?

Personally I think the answer is no. People just don't have the attention span for reading or creating that kind of content anymore. But I do wish it would come back as it was my favorite period of internet interaction. An internet stranger can dream.

Gaming!

What video game are you all playing right now? Or would like to play? What are your experiences like? Joys? Woes?

Just dove back into Stardew Valley. Enjoying my shiny new Meadowlands farm! I only play for an in-game day or two at a time because A. I just don't have the energy/attention span right now and B. the no save/time management stresses me out if I play too long lol

I started Horizon Zero Dawn and loved it but I haven't felt like sitting down to a commitment game, if you know what I mean. I'll get back to it though!

Currently playing Genshin Impact, Dragon's Dogma 2, Baldur's Gate 3, Final Fantasy 7 re...whatever

Genshin: Pretty boring atm. That new banner they implemented hated me just as much as the weapon's banner. Still burnt out on Fontaine/never really warmed up to it so all the quest I still have there remain unfinished.

Dragon's Dogma 2: making my way through it slowly. There is a lot to do. Just like the first one, I mainly enjoy the gameplay and scenery, the plot is pretty uninteresting again. Pawns more or less talking to each other can be kinda cute. They're still pretty dumb though. Something I find fascinating is how the devs actually changed the dumbass "romance" system from the first game only to end up with something that's almost as bad, just in a different way. Guys, if you're gonna halfass it again, just leave it out entirely! I promise nobody is playing this game for the romance!

Baldur's Gate: Bit the bullet and loaded my only pre-messup save from the end of Act 1. Have to make my way through all of Act 2 now but I was just too angry at the bug to just finish it with the state I arrived at. I'm not super motivated though and Dragon's Dogma is eating most of my gaming time atm.

Final Fantasy 7: Playing together with a friend so it's very slow going because of scheduling. Not really feeling it, to be honest. Dislike the more explicit romance options. Hate the weirdo characters showing up that the game expects you to magically know but they're from some mobile game I never played and look like they're straight out of Kingdom Hearts so I'm just confused. Not sure where that whole alternate timeline stuff is going and am not a fan so far.

I'm playing BG3 and as long as I don't get in my own head about it, things go well (I often will make a decision and then by like WAIT WAS THAT RIGHT???? because this game feels so huge and like every decision seems to have outcomes I do not prepare for).

I’m back in Skyrim and loving it! My computer unfortunately updated Vortex and so Vortex decided to update my mods, which broke everything because I hadn’t updated past the 5.9whatever version. It took a few hours to get things working, I ultimately had to update Skyrim because legacy versions of some of my updated mods don’t exist. SOS is acting a little weird (like hilarious proportions sometimes)but otherwise it works. And it feels so good to be back in that world! I did thieves guild this weekend and next I plan to just wander across the realm with my adventuring party and clear caves and bandit hideouts. We’ll head home to check on the kids and pets (6 kids, 2 dogs, 2 cats) and the rest of the party. I swap people out so someone is always home and I love coming back and seeing everyone relaxing around the dining table and chilling in the comfy chairs in front of the fireplace. Quest lines are great but domestic life is the best.

Eclipse

(Anonymous) 2024-04-07 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
So, there's a solar eclipse tomorrow, and I'm in a region that's going to get a good peek at it.

Here's something that's really surprised me: how...relentlelssly negative some folks are about it! To a certain extent, I get it: there's an influx of thousands of tourists to what are relatively small cities. But the mocking ("lmao idiots excited over the moon blocking the sun for 2 minutes, what losers") and misery, I feel, goes above and beyond that. It's so bad that a photography community I belong to on FB had to shut down comments on an eclipse post - something I haven't seen them have to do ever before, in the several years I've belonged to it. So strange! Of all the things that there are to be angry about in the world, why do we have to be angry about this, too? Can't we just allow ourselves to enjoy a minor wonder of the universe, or at least be okay with others doing so?

Anyway...if you're in its path, hope you all have a good eclipse tomorrow.

The eclipse might stress out your animal. It is probably a good idea to put them in a room with the curtains/blinds closed during the eclipse. Just an FYI.

Grrr

(Anonymous) 2024-04-08 07:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I know most likely no one will see this but I just had to vent!

I came outside to watch the eclipse without knowing that the back door of my new place automatically locks behind you and the key I have only works for the deadbolt, not the doorknob. Now I'm stuck outside for a couple hours until my roommates get home. I don't know anyone here and I'm barefoot (only planned to be outside for a few minutes and not go outside of the yard) so there's nothing I can do except hang out and wait.

Oh well, at least the weather's nice.
