Humans have always had a fascination with death, murder, and crime. Almost immediately after the invention of the printing press we have true crime publications. Before that, it was probably in ballads that don't exactly archive well. It's always been here.

It's not about the fandom being "wholesome". Too many True Crime fans are harassing and stalking the grieving families of murder victims, either to get clues or to accuse them.of the murder. And the families of many murder victims have asked podcasters to not make any content about their loved ones only to be ignored.

It's a fandom that is hurting real people in a very real way. Of course people are going to have a problem with that!

Granted, not everyone who participates in the True Crime fandom is like that. But people have no way to know if you're one of those people who go too far.

To me, it just sounds horribly distasteful to use the word “fan” about real life horrors. I’ve always considered true crime to be an interest, not a fandom.
And echoing some of the above: the amateurs who are trying to act like it’s a fandom are doing real harm. It’s actually pretty sick and I’m glad to see that there is finally some backlash to the rash of podcasters and TikTokkers. It’s only a matter of time before some face real consequences for what they’re doing and before long lawsuits will be common.

I'd say "true crime" is a fandom, sure. "I'm fascinated by serial killers like I'm fascinated by train wrecks, and consume a lot of content about unsolved mysteries and criminal investigations and related processes" is a common enough thing.

"I am a legit fan of some person that murdered a bunch of people IRL and write real people letters in prison and shit" is a whole other thing, which exists too, but not exactly a fandom per se.

I have absolutely no idea what you're on about OP, and as for the pictures in this image the only connection I'm making between them is that they're all black because other than that they look different to me.

And tbh if she's a sensitivity consultant for people writing black characters specifically then yes, they're going to be similar in that one regard, that's not self-inserting in of itself. I'd have to know what each character is like to be able to judge that.
