I am guilty of this on my old FFnet account that I no longer have access to ;_;
I didn't mean to be part of the problem - I saw that everyone else had abandoned their fics like that and thought that that was what you were suppose to do with long incompleted fics I'M SORRY.

So I sort of agree? More so with the imperialism than the sexism, but a little bit with the sexism.

I don't like the sexism and imperialism but I think it is part of the legacy of the franchise, dovetailing with the fact that Bond as a character kind of has to be at least a little bit of a prick. It's important there is this slightly negative, grim aspect to the franchise and character. Bond is a coldblooded killer and an asshole committing crimes in the service of a deeply objectionable fading empire. You need a little tint of that in with the jet-setting glamor to give the whole thing the proper feeling.

I never saw a James Bond movie. I had always eyerolled at Connery Bond (because I grew up in the Brosnan Bond Era). Then I saw Connery Bond (I think it was Octopussy? Where he slaps the blonde woman by the poolside?), and I have to agree with you.

I didn't express myself well, lol. I had never seen a Bond movie (and thought Connery was overrated), until a few years ago I finally did watch a Bond movie, and it was his, and I found Connery attractive and felt he really personified Bond as Fleming imagined. And I am agreeing with OP, as much as I dislike both sexism and imperialism. Maybe I should try out Daniel Craig's Bond?

I do think the Craig Bond is worth watching! Although for my money, the Bond that comes closest to Fleming's Bond is Timothy Dalton.

I’m just ready for Bond to have slightly more interesting imperialism, misogyny, and other flaws.

Make him condescending about foreign nations, completely convinced of the superiority of modern Britain, and also conspicuously non-racist. Make him believe that equal personal relationships with women are impossible, but also professional with the ones he works with. Make him an active seductor, someone who’s highly emotionally manipulative and ready to seduce women, men, and anyone else.

Yeah, the imperialism and racism and (to a lesser extent) the misogyny is built in. Don't try to lightly brush over it while never asking what this white British guy is doing in all these "exotic" locations, lean into that and be interesting!

i disagree about sexism to an extent. like modern levels i don't think you could take out, but i don't think it needs to be 1950s-1990s levels.

the imperialism is foundational. i mean, it's about a spy! that's the point, and the only way you avoid it is if you write a story where bond is truly burned not whatever the last movies were doing. and that's just mission impossible so...
