OP - This is extremely true! Most of the fandoms I've spent significant time in have been for things that were honestly mid (and often got pretty bad as they went on, lol). I'm not sure why HH feels like more of a "guilty pleasure" to me than my other fandoms. I think it's just messier? I wouldn't ask my friends to watch it with me because I feel like there's strong odds they would be like, "What the hell did I just watch? o_O"
