I relate to this as someone who is still struggling to come out of a long period of depression and found my first fandom hyperfixation in ages in Hazbin, haha. To me the "WHY" was less the show itself (which I consider firmly A Fun Time, if not much deeper than that) and more at getting into a fandom with so much drama and a dedicated hatedom, though.

Also, ymmv because we don't have the same OTP, but I've personally found my corner of the fandom social and generally friendly. I can't remember the last time I was in a fandom where people actually reached out to talk, and I'm writing fic again after a year and a half long break. So I've stopped thinking too much about the "WHY??" tbh.
