There was Agent Zero in Wolverine - I've heard other issues raised with his characterisation but he doesn't seem to fit in any of the categories you mentioned. Good examples sure are thin on the ground, though. :/

She shouldn't, at least from my perspective. Asians in general tend to get shafted in terms of representation.

In fact my teacher told my class about how there were auditions for Asian characters for some movie and they wanted the stereotype: effeminate male who was nerdy, awkward, and had a perpetual accent, and when they didn't get that stereotype they re-released their audition papers stating outright that the stereotype is what they wanted.

That said, I think that she has every right to be angry at stereotypical/lesser representation.

In fairness. the HP characters name is Cho Chang, they kinda had to cast an Asian actress in that role.

This is something that came up in my Asian American Studies class. Asian women are often highly sexualized, almost "dragon lady"-like, while men are effeminate, nerdy, and/or made out to be ruthless gangsters who know all forms of martial arts and are "exoticized."

You have every right to be angry as Asian representation in the media. Don't get me wrong, compared to early representations (where white actors put on yellow face, IE Mickey Rooney in Breakfast at Tiffanie's) it's a great leap, but there's a lot of work ahead of us to make Asian equals in the media.

If you don't feel comfortable with the representation of Asians/Asian Americans in pop culture, that's okay, because really you have every right to be.

Nah, you shouldn't be happy with just any representation even if it's stereotypical. And Asians are stereotyped so much.

I will say that Christina's definitely not the only POC/WOC on Grey's, though. I love Grey's because it has so many compared to many other shows, and they've all got depth. And Christina is so very very awesome.

Also, Sharon wasn't the only POC on BSG. Though BSG had its issues...

How can you not like Athena, Cho, Christina, and Tosh? Christina and Tosh are pretty much the only sane members of their teams and Athena and Cho are just plain awesome. Not to mention there's Sun from lost who's pretty much HBIC (just fighting with Juliet for that role).

I mean I get what you're saying, but I don't think any of those women are fetishized. Everyone's sexualized on Grey's and BSG and Torchwood anyway. And Cho's a love interest so she's going to be sexualized a little bit...

I didn't really get the feeling that anyone of them were just there to fill a minority spot. I mean possibly Tosh or Athena, but it makes SENSE to have asian doctors as there are quite a lot of them, at least in new york, and Harry goes to an international school, there would be SOME asian kids.

As for asian men, Jin has had his bad moments, but so has everyone on Lost. I'd put him as one of the morally BETTER characters on the show. Same with Miles (also from lost).

Thank you for mentioning Lost. I imagine some people sensitive to stereotypes quit watching in disgust after the first few episodes, but it's one of the better examples I've seen of transforming stereotypes as well as transforming characters. I do hope Sun gets her HBIC status back and doesn't continue to be relegated to Ms. Expository Question, to be answered by the all-knowing men. It made me want to throw things.

As for Cristina - Grey's Anatomy does blind casting - all of the characters are cast without their race being specified. So they probably didn't cast Sandra Oh because she fit some Asian stereotype but because she was the best suited for the role.

For good Asian male characters, how about Harry Kim from Star Trek: Voyager? He was AWESOME! And sometimes, even the geeky ones are cool (Hiro and Ando are the only reasons I still watch the badly written mess that Heroes has turned into.) But yeah, I see what you are saying, and I do agree there need to be a lot more non-stereotypical Asian characters on TV. Part of the reason I love the character of Hardison on Leverage so much is that he is about the most non-stereotypical black character I have ever seen, and I love the show for it.

What about Kimball Cho from The Mentalist? He seems to be a fairly well rounded character and lacks the specifics that you mentioned. Then again I've seen all of four or so episodes so I could be wrong.
