In fairness. the HP characters name is Cho Chang, they kinda had to cast an Asian actress in that role.

I agree, they kinda had to for her.

though rowling's a little at fault for creating an asian character with a name that's both chinese and japanese. (because they're interchangeable cultures, right? :D)

Sorry, but Cho Chang isn't a Japanese name at all. Chinese and Korean? Maybe, Japanese? No. If it is then I've never encountered a name like it in my 6+ years of studying it.

ETA: Yes, she would be at fault for adding an Asian character to fill out the diversity chart.

I remember reading somewhere that she picked out the japanese "cho" and chinese "chang." I think cho means butterfly, but it's been years so I don't remember.

behindthename.com says it's a variant of "Chou" which does mean butterfly, but who knows how accurate that is.

This site does as well, and it's pretty accurate.

Ugh, she did, but she wrote it wrong (it's not Cho it's Chou　蝶ちょう, then again English always drops the extra syllable). I didn't know that, obscure vocabulary FTL.

Still... unless you really wanted to name your kid something Japanese or her parents are both, that's just leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

... But isn't Cho also used in Chinese? Mind, I've only seen it as a last name, but . . .

It's used a lot more often in Chinese. I'd even venture to say that it's used more often in Korean (though if anyone that knows Korean wishes to correct me, please do). It certainly is not a normal Japanese name.

Not as a first name! Mono-syllabic first names in Korean are pretty rare, AFAIK. Jin and Sun from Lost are good examples of such, but Cho isn't. If Cho were a Korean name, it would probably be shortened down from a longer name, like Cho-In or Cho-Sook.

This is coming from an Korean-American, with confirmation from her Korean mom. Take it as you will. =)

Do you mean in terms of "tokenism," or what? I don't understand what you mean.

And there are other POC in the Harry Potter universe, it's not just Cho.

Well tokenism and the idea that if you don't have X in your story then you're Y (Asian/Black/other race and racist, gays and homophobic, etc). Sure Cho is a character all her own but the idea that she's mostly a love interest just reinforces what the media already does to Asian women: sexualize them and not give them a real chance to be unique, special, etc.

Though I'm a girl that would rather see a well developed character than a character thrown in there to appease the masses and see nothing but stereotype written all over them. (I haven't read enough of the HP series to know if Cho is or not, but I'm assuming she fits quite a few of them.)

Actually, I thought she was kind of a boring character. :/ I didn't think she was sexualized all that much, though, just that she was portrayed as being really pretty and cute and Harry had a crush on her. Which does kind of fit the stereotype, but, you know, if she was white and was portrayed the same way, nobody would think that was as big of a deal.

That's one thing I think is problematic about race in the media -- writers/creators have to be careful not to stereotype POC, which is important, but at the same time, white people get a free pass in that regard, since it's pretty much impossible to stereotype them based on race (sex and gender maybe, but not race).

Actually, it seems to be canon that there aren't a lot of wizarding schools around - I think that Hogwarts was the only one in Britain. And Britain, like any other first world country, gets a lot of immigrants, some of whom will be from Asia. If one of them ends up being a wizard - well, they'd end up at Hogwarts. It doesn't scream tokenism to me; honestly, I think it makes more sense if there ARE at least a few HP characters who aren't white.

That makes sense, and I understand that, I just dislike it when characters seem tokenized (she seems like it, but as I mentioned in another comment I haven't read enough on her to know for sure, I just hate stereotyping and tokenization in general).

Wut? That's not a Japanese name at all. 'Cho' is a Korean surname as well as a Chinese one, but it looks like you're the one mixing up cultures.

Chou does mean butterfly, though. Also like most Romanization of Japanese words (such as Kyoto, Tokyo, Yoko, etc), the extra syllable is dropped so it'd be Cho. It's technically possible that it came from Japanese, but it's an obscure name to say "is Japanese."

Yeah, it's been forever since I've read the books and I was reading the name as if the family name came first and 'Chang' was her given name. Regardless, 'Cho Chang' works as a Chinese name more than it does as a mix of Japanese and Chinese.

Maybe her parents are two different nationalities?
